Network traffic indicator (with speed rate)

Added by My Self over 9 years ago

I would love to see an network traffic indicator, which shows the speed (e. x. [k]b/s) of the actual traffic.

The overkill would be in my eyes the speed indicator for both directions:

That screenshots are out of this commit: https://gerrit.omnirom.org/#/c/4956/ which includes exactly that feature in an alternative ROM (OMNIROM, Android 4.4). The base of this functionality was here, if I'm not mistaken: https://gerrit.omnirom.org/#/c/2509/

I hope this functionality could easily be merged / ported to Replicant - for a decided traffic overview and not least for security reasons.

You might wanna propose the idea on F-Droid forums

I'm not sure I got you right...

For a F-Droid request I schould have an app, which could show the traffic in the status bar. I've found a lot that kind of apps, but none of them is open source, so I can't go to f-droid with this "idea".

I thought, it would be cool to merge (or port) the system integrated functionality of that feature, (described above) from another ROM, which has a great viewable one.

But thanks anyway for your reply.

I'm not a big fan of adding non-critical features to Replicant, it makes maintenance a lot harder and I honestly don't have time to focus on adding feature: I prefer to do hardware support and security issues.

If an application from F-Droid can do it, that would be preferable. I think it makes sense to ask a developer to write such an application, either here or on F-Droid forums.

I understand (the reasons) and respect your attitude.

There is a problem with applications for this kind of feature.
You can see it for example on the free (but not open) "Network Monitor Mini" app here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=emVZDAChY1c
Or also here: http://dl-1.va.us.xda-developers.com/1/6/2/0/5/6/5/device00_conew1.jpg?key=Jqamnc-rkYXr1By4trEfZw&ts=1416477980

For apps there just seems to exist the possibility to overlay the speed meters / traffic indicators always on the top. So if I would choose to place the indicators over the status bar (on a free place), they are not dynamically if a message or something else is coming up in the status bar and mixing up the view with the indicators. Also indicators will be shown in every (fullscreen) app because it overlays everything. The "Network Monitor Mini" app seems to have the point "hide for apps", so that you can choose in which app, the indicators will be hidden, but that overlay-circumstance is everything but cool in my eyes...

IMHO the better solution should be to integrate the indicator(s) in the status bar.
An example for that are the screenshots under this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2444666

Nowadays, there exist an app for that, (sadly using the overlaying solution, but what the hey).
It's named DataStats: https://github.com/takke/DataStats
