samsung galaxy phone have both replicant and cyanogenmod closed a backdoor?

Added by til sam almost 9 years ago

This website https://www.fsf.org/blogs/community/replicant-developers-find-and-close-samsung-galaxy-backdoor is about a backdoor on samsung galaxy phones that replicant has closed.
I would want to get a samsung mini s4 I9195 and flash cyanogenmod 12 on it. Not replicant because to much hardware will then not be enabled. Can I get to know if cyanogenmod has closed the backdoor on samsung mini s4?

IMHO, this is the wrong forum for that question; the CyanogenMod forum would be better for that. But i <think> the answer is no.
It's depending on, if CyanogenMod still uses the original extracted binary file (libsec-ril.so), instead of the open source replacement: http://redmine.replicant.us/projects/replicant/wiki/Samsung-RIL
Source: http://redmine.replicant.us/projects/replicant/wiki/SamsungGalaxyBackdoor

By the way your device (I9195) isn't supported by Replicant, yet.

But i <think> the answer is no.

As far as I can see, this is a Qualcomm modem so it probably does not even use the same protocol, so the Samsung Galaxy Backdoor doesn't apply. However, there are certainly other ways the modem can access the main storage on Qualcomm.

Thanks.

wrong forum for that question

Right. I asked here, because the backdoor was found by replicant. Maybe replicant knows more about the backdoor than cyanogenmod? I will ask the question on the cyanogenmod forum too.

Qualcomm modem so it probably does not even use the same protocol, so the Samsung Galaxy Backdoor doesn't apply

If samsung enables a backdoor on one chip, don't they somehow put the same backdoor into all chips they use? They must have a reason to enable the backdoor in the first place.

device (I9195) isn't supported by Replicant

I know. From answers on this forum, I concluded that if I flash replicant and non free hardware drivers on the samsung s3, I gain nothing on privacy.
Cyanogenmod 12 provides a bigger range of phones than replicant. Samsung mini s4 could be a phone I would buy over samsung s3.

other ways the modem can access the main storage on Qualcomm

I am searching for a phone and system that provides as much privacy as possible. I know about the absence of free software phones and its implications or possible implications on privacy. Reluctantly I try to find the next best phone. A system where hardware is supported. Tell me if there is a better phone on the market with comparable hardware?

I don't know, probably you have to search the web for that answer on your own.
IMHO it's depending on, what you want to do with your phone. I've seen a "just for calls" phone the last few days here:
http://web.media.mit.edu/~mellis/cellphone/

Or some other so-called "open source mobile phones" here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_open-source_mobile_phones

If you don't mind using proprietary software-(parts), you also could have a look at the (commercial) "Blackphone 2":

Of course, I doubt CyanogenMod people have any clue about how the backdoor works.

If samsung enables a backdoor on one chip, don't they somehow put the same backdoor into all chips they use? They must have a reason to enable the backdoor in the first place.

Probably not. See SamsungGalaxyBackdoor for details. The backdoor is a class of commands that gives too much access to the filesystem to the modem. It's more like a "debug feature left open" than an intentional backdoor (they could have hidden it, etc), but it doesn't change the consequences.

Also if you want a phone with good modem isolation that runs Replicant and a free bootloader, stay tuned for news about the LG Optimus Black.

Thanks. I think blackphone only maintains software for 2 years. For a 600usd phone a bit to expensive. Do you know if the hardware has been chosen because it is well suited or is it only about the software?

About the samsung backdoor, I know grasped what it is about.

Is it the http://www.gsmarena.com/lg_optimus_black_p970-3704.php?
Like the other replicant phones, not all hardware will work without non free software?

Do you know if the hardware has been chosen because it is well suited or is it only about the software?

Both versions of the Fairphone are not good fits for software freedom. They have chosen these platforms because it makes it easier form them to offload the development of the device to other well-known companies.

Like the other replicant phones, not all hardware will work without non free software?

Correct, please take a look at this series of posts (especially the fourth part) for a detailed overview: https://code.paulk.fr/article20/a-hacker-s-journey-freeing-a-phone-from-the-ground-up-first-part

Thank you. There should be an all hardware replicant phone.
