Old files remain after a fresh 'wipe data & install' on Galaxy S2

Added by sel mo over 8 years ago

It's the first time I installed Replicant, all went well, the phone works very well - many thanks to this project! ;)

However, I was very surprised after booting my new phone, and browsing the file explorer, that I can still see some old files laying around...

FYI, I followed the GalaxyS2I9100Installation

I chose to use the SD card install method; I formatted the card before putting the zip onto it (and the SD card is fine; ie. no old files issue there).

I selected the wipe data steps as described:

8. Select wipe data/factory reset
9. Confirm the data wipe by selecting Yes -- delete all user data

But, for example, in my new Replicant I can see several application specific com files located in /storage/sdcard0/Android/data/ ...?

Has anyone else had a similar issue?

Should I re-install Replicant?

Thanks

Well, recovery is making an over-statement, it doesn't delete all the user data, only the configuration for applications (that are in /data). Everything on the sdcard (internal or not) is kept.

Ok, I see, thanks for the explanation ;)

Is there a way I can wipe the internal sd card clean during/before the install process? A command in adb maybe?

It would make it easier than having to manually figure out which files are Replicant's and which are "from the past".

You could give the menu-point '- mounts and storage' (in the main-menu of the Recovery) a try.
Here you could:
  • '- format /emmc' (= internal storage), and/or
  • '- format /sdcard' (= external [microSD card] storage).

The mount-points are i9100 related; can't say if they differ on other models.
It could be, that you have to check that the storage you want to format is 'unmount'ed before you'll try to format it (in the same menu-point).

Thanks for the info - I'll try it out and will post back on how/what I managed to do ;)

Hi My Self,

I finally took the time to try wiping out the emmc with your instructions, afterwhich I reinstalled Replicant.

It worked perfectly!

I got rid of folders and files which had been lingering on the internal storage from the phone's factory stock Android.

Now I finally have a clean Replicant install :)

It could be useful for other users interested in installing Replicant to mention this step in GalaxyS2I9100Installation...

What do you think?

As you mentioned this was specific to i9100, we can just specify this info for GalaxyS2I9100Installation.

In parallel, we can ask for feedback from users who have other Replicant compatible devices as to what the equivalent options are for those devices, and then add the info to the respective Install wiki pages.
