New images - Updating

Added by christina d over 8 years ago

Hello,

I am happily running an 4.2.0003 image on my Galaxy S2, want to do the update to 0004.

------------------------------
Some questions:

1. The "recovery.img" procedure needs to be done again?

2. Do i have to "wipe data/factory reset" after the "install zip" in recovery mode?
(I am asking cause i want to keep my settings if possible.)

3. If i need to do the "wipe data/factory reset", what data do i lose? (so i mind to back them up before)

4. My internal storage is encrypted, is that OK for the update?

5. The new security certificates that "My Self" updated in the security section of the forum are included in the latest image?
(by the way i have the magic number of 160, as you said "My Self", thanx)

------------------------------
Thank you for the update!
love you guys :D

Well, the recovery image didn't change this time, so you can skip it.

2. Do i have to "wipe data/factory reset" after the "install zip" in recovery mode?

Generally speaking, it's a bad idea, but the difference between 0003 and 0004 is so minimal that this shouldn't cause any issue at all.

3. If i need to do the "wipe data/factory reset", what data do i lose? (so i mind to back them up before)

That would only erase the system's settings, not the data on the storage.

4. My internal storage is encrypted, is that OK for the update?

Mhh, It should be, yes, as long as you don't wipe data.

5. The new security certificates that "My Self" updated in the security section of the forum are included in the latest image?

Nope, you'll have to reinstall them if you want to use the newer versions.

So if i understood correctly,

  • i just reboot on recovery
  • install the 0004 image from the zip
  • i DON'T wipe data/factory reset
  • and then i just update the certificates

right?

Yep, that should do it!

IMHO, this procedure is generally called 'dirty flash', but it normally works great; (I've dirty flashed several devices with different AOSP ROMs [encrypted & unencrypted] a lot of times in the past). You more could expect problems on main release changes, (so if you come from Replicant <= 4.0 and want to upgrade to 4.2 XXXX, I would recommend the point '- wipe data/factory reset' to avoid/prevent boot loops or other misbehavior).

But you should consider to use the point '- wipe cache partition' instead.
(This point wipes the /cache partition only, no user data will be touched. This partition also contains dalvik-cache/*.dex [= compiled Android application code files, called .dex = dalvik executable files]. A little bit more about dalvik and/or .dex files could be found here: https://stackoverflow.com/a/7541404 for example).
That wiped files will be recreated on the next boot, automatically. (You'll see a screen with the headline 'Android is upgrading...' and the action 'Optimizing app X of Y'.

[...] what data do i lose? (so i mind to back them up before)

I always would recommend an backup. A quick way to do this could be over the app oandbackup (https://f-droid.org/repository/browse/?fdid=dk.jens.backup), if you like give it a try.
(You just should leave the point 'Wifi Access Points' [on the bottom] unchecked, because Replicant, [with its missing Wi-Fi firmware] usually don't has the file /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf. So if you want to backup that not existing file, it would lead to an error).
