Is it necessary to unlock the bootloader before installing on i9100?

Added by Bruno Dantas over 8 years ago

I purchased an i9100 from eBay with unlocked GSM. The item listing says nothing about the bootloader, and neither does the install instructions on Replicant.

I'm just wondering so that I know what to expect and so that I can get everything ready. Thanks.

Hi Bruno,

To install Replicant, you don't need anything else besides the install instructions on the Replicant wiki.

Download the recovery images and system zip archive, check their signatures to match the developer's, copy the zip archive to an SD card, install Heimdall, put your phone in download mode, heimdall flash the recovery image, reboot in recovery mode, install system from zip on SD card, go back in recovery menu, wipe user data/factory reset and reboot.

I had installed CyanogenMod on Motorola devices a few times, and unlocking the bootloader was always the very first step. Good to know that the i9100 (and presumably other Samsung devices) provides a "download mode" out-of-the-box and does not require the preliminary step of unlocking the bootloader.

Thank you, Tiberiu. This is very good to know.

Yes, with the S2, you can enter download mode by pressing at the same time Volume Down, Home and Power buttons. Happy to help hack your device!
