Galaxy Trend Plus and/or LG L90

Added by Konrad Talik about 9 years ago

Dear Denis, Paul and Team,

I would like to contribute in the development of Replicant by porting it on a new devices and/or by writing missing software. However my issue is more related to devices so I decided to put this message in this forum -- feel free to move it to development or anywhere where it fits better.

Currently I have following Android devices available for hacking:

  • Samsung S7580 Galaxy Trend Plus
  • LG L90 (LG-D405n)
  • Sony-Ericsson XPERIA X10 mini pro

Please tell me if there is any possibility to start with any of above devices. If not, please respond too. I'll then continue my search for an appropriate device.

With regards,

That's great to hear! The easiest way to start is probably to get one of the already-supported devices and start hacking Replicant on it. You can take a look at the list of Tasks for improving Replicant, some of which are common to all devices.

Porting a new device to Replicant is also great, but bear in mind that most devices are fatally flawed as they don't allow running free bootloaders. Nevertheless, it's still better to have a free system running on them than not having it.

The devices you suggested would need to be thoroughly evaluated regarding how they would perform with free software but here are a few remarks:
  • The Samsung S7580 Galaxy Trend Plus has a Broadcom VideoCore IV, which is currently not a good target for freedom as it requires proprietary software for the bootloader and has the VideoCore (running proprietary software) in charge of many things. The situation may evolve in the more or less near future though. In addition, the bootloadermay be signed, which would make the device fatally flawed. There is no CyanogenMod support either, which would make a port even more complication.
  • The LG L90 (LG-D405n) has no CyanogenMod support for 4.2 (10.1) available and is running on a Qualcomm platform, which requires a proprietary and signed bootloader (fatal flaw) as well as numerous proprietary blobs.
  • The Xperia X10 Mini Pro has a Qualcomm platform and the same flaws.
