[solved] network signal undetected on GT-I9300/Replicant 4.2 0003

Added by Fil Lupin almost 8 years ago

Hi there,
I am a bit confused, I got a strange behavior yesterday with my GT-I9300 : it does not detect any network.
I reboot it without any more success.

I tried with another SIM card but it does not work, so it seems to me that the device itself does not work, either the hardware or the replicant system.

To check the problem, I got into "settings/Wireless & network/More/Mobile networks" and I launched "adb logcat" and then I checked "Use only 2G networks" and then "network operators".

Here is the trace I got:

I/ActivityManager( 2245): START u0 {act=android.intent.action.MAIN cmp=com.android.phone/.MobileNetworkSettings} from pid 5340
W/WindowManager( 2245): Failure taking screenshot for (328x583) to layer 21015
D/TelephonyManager( 2431): getLteOnCdmaMode=0 curVal=-1 product_type='' lteOnCdmaProductType=''
I/ActivityManager( 2245): Displayed com.android.phone/.MobileNetworkSettings: +211ms
I/Use2GOnlyCheckBoxPreference( 2431): set preferred network type=1
D/GsmUmtsOptions( 2431): preferenceTreeClick: return true
D/GsmUmtsOptions( 2431): preferenceTreeClick: return false
I/ActivityManager( 2245): START u0 {act=android.intent.action.MAIN cmp=com.android.phone/.NetworkSetting} from pid 2431
W/WindowManager( 2245): Failure taking screenshot for (328x583) to layer 21020
I/ActivityManager( 2245): Displayed com.android.phone/.NetworkSetting: +216ms

I installed a Replicant 4.2 0003 I built a year ago.

Of course (and sadly), I did not get a logcat before to compare, when my device detected network.
Do you have any idea of the problem here ?
Does anyone can test these steps with a GT-I9300 to compare the result please?
Thank you.

Is there anyone with a Samsung Galaxy S3 (GT I-9300)?
Does anyone can try the easy and fast steps described upside please?
Thank you.

I would like to check if that is due to Replicant or my phone...

RE: network signal undetected on GT-I9300/Replicant 4.2 0003 - Added by Fil Lupin almost 8 years ago

Is there anyone which know Replicant sufficiently to launch the following command please ?

1) go to "settings/Wireless & network/More/Mobile networks"
2) launch adb logcat
3) go to "Use only 2G networks" and then "network operators"

Is seems very trivial but would help me in a decisive manner to check why my phone does not work. It is now 9 days it is KO...
Thank you.

edit : please find attached the dmesg output and radio log, and result of

adb shell busybox ls -la /efs/
(when root) with in particular
# cat /efs/FactoryApp/serial_no
00000000000
# cat /efs/FactoryApp/hw_ver
Not Active

solution of http://redmine.replicant.us/boards/9/topics/8841?r=9411#message-9411 can not apply. http://redmine.replicant.us/issues/1605 and seems to be similar.
Is some information is missing, could you tell which one and how to give it to you?

I can hardly understand how I can detect network but not connect to it.

Since I have no answer for more than 3 weeks, I would like to understand if :
- you do not understand the issue
- you do not understand how it is possible
- you do not have time.

Can you just let me know please?

Well, all I could say here is that I had that kind of situation two times in the past:

  1. with my I9100, after playing around too much with the system app STK.apk (= which should be required if you use special SIM functionalities, for example dual-SIM, twinBill, Homezones etc.). After deleting this app, my device doesn't asked me for my PIN anymore, and so mobile data was broken - even after recover this .apk and after a full reflash of the ROM and a complete factory reset. I just got it to work again, by flashing an alternative ROM (OMNI 4.4 in my case) and reflash and factory reset again with Replicant, (and I don't know how and why this workaround worked, but it does)...
  2. with my I9300 flashed with Replicant 6.0 from here: http://redmine.replicant.us/boards/21/topics/12057
Just in use my device lost the connection and don't want to bring it back - even after reboots, reflashes etc. For me it was fact that this must be a hardware issue, so I replaced the logic board of the device, to get back the full functionality. (I don't have tested wi-fi, because I don't use proprietary firmwares).

So I can't say too much here.

- you do not understand the issue
- you do not understand how it is possible
- you do not have time.

For now, I have to choose answer c). I don't have time to create (and compare) logs from my defect- and my working devices (logic boards), but I'm looking forward to do this, if you'll give me more time...

Thank you for your reply!
It seems you edited my reply instead of replying but it is understandable so no problem ;)

For information, I did not use any special apk changing SIM functionalities neither changed my replicant version so it seems a different issue there.
At least I understand the issue sufficiently well explained to be understandable.

I will continue some tests on this device while trying to find another phone to call.
Tonight, I installed the 0004 version from the replicant site to check my build is not the issue, but symptoms are the same.

I plan to install replicant 4.2 0003 version from the replicant website to check if anything changed.
For reminding the case, I builded and installed a replicant 4.2 v0003 since ~1,5 year when suddenly,3 weeks ago, I lost network. I did not install any apk since more than 6 months.

edit : installation of 0003 changed nothing. When inserting my SIM card, I need to reboot, enter my SIM code, and then when searching for available networks, I can register a mobile network but Status is :

Network: [OPERATOR NAME]
Signal strength: -79dBm 17 asu
Mobile network type: HSDPA:8
Service state: Out of service
Roaming: not roaming
Mobile network state: disconnected
My phone number: [MY PHONE NUMBER]
IMEI: [MY IMEI]
IMEI SV: 01
IP address: unavailable
Wi-Fi MAC address: unavailable

Oh boy, you're right - big sorry for that! Of course I recovered your previous post (as quoted and leave my comment inside to prevent complete confusion).

For information, I did not use any special apk changing SIM functionalities neither changed my replicant version so it seems a different issue there.

It just was my story to tell what I was trying before I got a problem on my I9100. Of course it's not linked to your problem here...

I can register a mobile network but [...]

If I remember correctly, I can't register to a mobile network with my defect logic board and status infos like IMEI etc. were tagged as <unavailable> in my case, but I have to verify that...

Because I need more time, everybody else's support is welcome here.

It is perhaps linked: once restarted the phone under CWM (v6.0.3.6) recovery mode, I printed the log. Here is the output:

RE: network signal undetected on GT-I9300/Replicant 4.2 0003 - Added by Fil Lupin over 7 years ago

By the way, I installed also replicant 4.2 0004 on a GT9000 and I have the same issue.
I first tried to call an emergency service, without success.
I then inserted a SIM card, but it does not work.

RE: network signal undetected on GT-I9300/Replicant 4.2 0003 - Added by Fil Lupin over 7 years ago

Ok, checking with GT9000 was a good idea but this one was network-locked so in fact, it could not work.

Let's go back to the main issue.
This issue seems to be due to /efs partition. The IMEI was 0049** which does not makes me wonder at first. However, it seems to be a default IMEI when android can not read /efs partition, which contains wifi MAC and IMEI.
After flashing /efs back to the save I did before installing replicant, my phone is usable to make call and receive/send sms.

However, this /efs has changed without making anything special, in particular I did not flashed anything since 1,5 year.
In addition, my Wifi MAC address is not readable so something definitively occurs with this partition...

RE: network signal undetected on GT-I9300/Replicant 4.2 0003 - Added by Fil Lupin almost 7 years ago

Hi there.
Just a word to say it happens once again.

I still get into /efs directory default values (/efs/FactoryApp/serial_contains 00000..., /efs/FactoryApp/hw_ver => "Not Active", etc.)
It seems the partition is not readable and the phone assumes default values...

It is an issue if a phone crashes like this. Do you have any idea where I could check logfiles which could be useful before I reinstall?

Please post the output of

adb root
adb shell ls -al /efs

This might give more hints.

RE: network signal undetected on GT-I9300/Replicant 4.2 0003 - Added by Fil Lupin almost 7 years ago

Since my post, I tried to use heimdall to send a backup of my modem.img but without succeeding.

Now, the context evolved I can't connect through

adb shell

I added more details on my issue there: https://redmine.replicant.us/boards/3/topics/14293?r=14301 so I can not give any more information for the moment sorry.

RE: network signal undetected on GT-I9300/Replicant 4.2 0003 - Added by Fil Lupin almost 7 years ago

Ok so I install replicant-6 on my i9300.
I again got the no signal message, but I now have an OS and access to adb!

Since the issue seems the same as 12 months ago, I tried to flash again EFS but it did not succed:

heimdall flash --EFS efs.img
Heimdall v1.4.1

but without anymore success: it seems it stops the middle of the downloading... I took the risk to pull out the battery and put it back to restart the phone and flash again the phone just with replicant-6:
heimdall flash --BOOT recovery-i9300.img --RECOVERY recovery-i9300.img
adb sideload replicant-6.0-i9300.zip

I would like to check the integrity of efs.img but I do not know how to do.
I will check the size and date of last modification of efs.img to confirm it could be the one I used 12 months ago.

I checked efs.img, it is the same as my backup file, and it seems to be the one I used 12 months ago.

I realize this is not secure, could you erase this file please? I will find another way to send it.

edit :
I found the solution here : https://redmine.replicant.us/issues/1605#note-7
I flash the RADIO with the samsung radio image and it works !

heimdall flash --RADIO modem.bin

I probably make a mistake in my message 12 months ago (https://redmine.replicant.us/boards/9/topics/13191?r=13371#message-13371) when writing I flashed /efs.

Anyway, thanks for your time Wolfgang.
Since it was the second time I got this issue, I would suggest to add this to a troubleshooting section, it could help other people. :)
