Internal SD card won't mount

Added by T C over 7 years ago

I recently did an update on my i9100 to the latest version of Replicant. I did it by backing everything up to my computer, then starting over.

When I started using this phone a few months ago I encrypted the internal storage. Now, after formatting the phone and starting over, I cannot access the internal storage (ie. can't take photos, download documents etc - although I can download apps??).

I guess it's because the internal storage is still encrypted that I can't use it now. How can I fix this?

Thanks in advance

In i9100 (Samsung Galaxy S2), when you select "Settings" > "Backup & reset" > "Factory data reset" in the Replicant system or "wipe data/factory reset" in Recovery mode, what gets deleted and formatted is actually only the personal data partition /data, but not the internal storage or the external SD card. In this reply I will assume that Replicant's latest version you have tried is 4.2 0004 and that you don't have an external SD card mounted in your phone.

It means the internal storage is /storage/sdcard0 is still encrypted and you lack the key on your fresh install of Replicant's latest version.

That's why you can't save files (photos taken with the camera, files downloaded from the web etc) in there any more. While the /data partition is anew and applications and theirs settings are saved in the /data partition, /storage/sdcard0 is not decrypted.

If before the upgrade to the latest version of Replicant you have backed up the encryption key (which was probably stored in /data partition), then you should be able to copy the key from the backup on your computer to the canonical file path in /data and instruct Replicant to use that key to decrypt your internal storage /storage/sdcard0. I haven't used encryption on my phone yet, so I can't help you with the canonical path for the key or how you can instruct Replicant to reuse that key.

However, if before the upgrade to the latest version you have backed up all your files from the decrypted /storage/sdcard0 partition, you could also format the internal storage /storage/sdcard0 by going to "Settings" > "Storage" > "Erase SD card" and copy back your files from the backup on your computer. Please be careful with this and know that I don't take responsibility if for some reason you end up losing part or all your data.

Please let us know if and how you got your problem solved. Thanks!
