Call quality

Added by Kiril Atanasov about 10 years ago

Hello I installed Replicant 4.2 on Samsung S3. I do not have much experience with smartphones and my problem could seem like a joke, but it's not. I have a problem with calls - the voises are like they are equalised at 800%. Even when I lower the volume I can't understand what the other people are saying. This is only during calls - I've used headphones and the effect is the same. When I listen to music the the volume is normal.
I've tried the same sim card on another phone and there was no problem with the sound.

Does anyone had similar experience? Do you have any idea how I can fix it - I would be grateful for every advice.

Have you checked call sound settings? (Settings -> Sound -> Volume)

Unfortunately, yes. I have lowered all of them, but It still continues to do the same. And the people I speak with also hear me the same way.

Have you checked in the Sound Settings "Safe Volume" and or played with Equalizer in Music Effects?

In my Samsung Galaxy S there's a tab named WM8994 in Equalizer. In Amplifier Level I have -10db by default (I haven't touched anything there)

I've checked the safe headset volume. I haven't played with the equalizer in any way. I'm thinking of reinstalling replicant just in case...

I've install cyanogen mod and the call quality was great. I've reinstall replicant and have the same problem with the calls. Any ideas? Can I install some program which could probably help me?

I think our current implementation doesn't support high quality audio and that in general, audio is not finely tuned during calls. I know there is room for improvement there and I'm taking note of your remarks. Thanks for reporting this!

Thanks for the reply. I thought I'd done something wrong.

Hi. I have recently installed the latest Replicant stable release 4.2.2. I did this because I agree with, and fully support the principle of using only free open source software on my device, since this is the only way to be certain that I am running code that actually does what it says on the tin. And Replicant looks like the only distro available, which places privacy and security at the top of its development agenda. In fact, I actually bought a new GT-I9300 to replace my more modern Samsung S6, as the vendor/carrier modified Android version essentially amounts to spyware. I'm even considering going all the way, and building a GTA04 device running Replicant, as this looks like the only truly open hardware available, which can run free open firmware on all components. I am also keen to develop and contribute source code to the Replicant project, if possible. In short, I love what you guys are doing.

All that having been said, I am finding that call quality issues are preventing me from fully committing to Replicant as my OS of choice. I am on the Vodafone Ireland mobile network, and have the following user experience:

1. Call quality to all landlines is excellent.
2. Call quality to mobile devices on other networks is variable.
3. Call quality to devices on the Vodafone Ireland network is very poor, and distance from the nearest base station does not make any significant difference.

I suspect this may be due to the fact that some mobile networks, including Vodafone Ireland, have implemented HD voice as standard, and that Replicant and/or the GT-I9300 do not support HD voice.

What can I do to resolve this issue? I am reluctant to install proprietary vendor firmware for obvious reasons, and, if necessary, am willing write/contribute source code. Do you have any suggestions?

Further update: point 3 - not all devices on Vodafone Ireland network manifest this issue, but if it happens for calls to a specific device, it happens for all calls to that device.
