Privacy on Replicant

Added by Mzee Mzee over 9 years ago

Hello guys,
I'm new to Replicant and first of all I would like to thank you VERY much for creating a truly free Android replacement. I recently got a Samsung Galaxy S3 which I already installed Replicant on.

I still have some questions as I my focus is mostly on privacy:

1.) Is there any way to install and run TextSecure without having to use a Google account?
2.) If not: Is there any other comparable alternative which gives me the best privacy possible?
3.) Which apps from F-Droid do you use for instant messaging?

Thanks a lot for answering those questions.

3.) Which apps from F-Droid do you use for instant messaging?

I checked into this recently. I can't find an FOSS instant messenger that supports AIM, ICQ, MSN, etc. libpurple has been ported, or so it would seem, but no one's made anything we can use as an app.

There is source code, so you could try building it with the Replicant SDK. Mostly, you should ask people over at F-Droid why they don't include it.

2.) If not: Is there any other comparable alternative which gives me the best privacy possible?

There are a few XMPP clients that support OTR, such as ChatSecure, which works well with Replicant.

3.) Which apps from F-Droid do you use for instant messaging?

Mostly ChatSecure. I've also used Beem in the past, if you don't need end-to-end encryption.

Thank you both very much for answering. I might give ChatSecure a try. I already tried to compile TextSecure myself but I was using the Google Android SDK which was probably the reason it didn't work. If I manage to build it, I'll let you know.

I personally prefer the XMPP client named Conversations, if you want another recommendation.
IMHO it's more "lightweight" in memory usage and permission requests. But of course it depends on what you want to do with your XMPP client...

Conversations supports end-to-end encryption with either OTR or OpenPGP.
It's easy to build it yourself:

(just make sure to have ANDROID_HOME point to your Android SDK), or get it over f-droid:

if you want to give it a try...
