rtl8187 wifi

Added by Finn Ryan about 6 years ago

Would it be possible to get wifi dongles that use the rtl8187 driver working with replicant? It's free software, and I've got a dongle which works fine on desktop gnu/linux distros with it.

Is it simply a matter of recompiling the kernel with support for the necessary modules/drivers? Will extra work need to be done to make it work with the RepWifi app?

I'm no driver/kernel guy, but I suspect it is a perfectly doable thing, provided that both driver and firmware are actually free software (if any/both is needed).

Again, I'm not sure about the technical details, but..
I think that what was done with atheros-based dongles was essentially compiling Replicant with the needed modules, and maybe some tweaking to make them work just fine.

I can be pretty certain on this one! ;-)
RepWifi will work out-of-the-box regardless of the specific chip in use, as everything related to that is managed by wpa_supplicant, so RepWifi doesn't need to be chip-aware to work.

All in all, I guess there aren't any particular blockers to integrate that into Replicant..
But you may want to hear from more knoledgeable people to be sure..

Cheers,

I know that Joonas (aka Putti) has a pending patch to add support for rt2500usb wifi devices. Perhaps he could comment here regarding whether rtl8187 wifi devices can also be supported and what would need to be done to get it to work.

The kernel config "RTL8187" needs to be enabled and I would assume that's it.
