Run some test on i9305

Added by Emmett Brown 9 months ago

Hi!

I saw that Kurtis Hanna asked for someone to run some test on i9305 device (Feature #1813)

I would be glad to help!

How can I install on my i9305 an image, run some test and report back?

Thanks!

Emmett

Hello Emmett,

Thanks for your willingness to run some tests on your i9305! Please make sure that you back up your device properly before testing this if you have anything on it you'd like to save. The i9305 ROM image that needs testing is here: https://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/replicant/images/replicant-6.0/replicant-6.0-0004-rc1/images/i9305/

Cordially,
Kurtis

I could also do some testing. I have 5 Replicant-compatible devices (i9100, i9300, i9305, n7100, n5110) and quite a bit of experience as a user/tinkerer.

What is the best way to get in touch/report back to you?

Hello !

The modem doesn't work in my case.
The simcard is not recognized.

When I make a "logcat radio -b", I've got this :
dlopen failed: dlopen failed: library "/system/lib/libsec-ril.so" not found.

Do I have to do something more to make deeper test ?

Thanks

Emmett

Hello. I think you already know that the i9305 is a device still incomplete because the modem does not work. There is nothing new in this.

Hello Emmett,

I'm sorry for the confusion. I should have stated that this is the release candidate for our upcoming Replicant 6.0 0004 release and that it doesn't currently have the experimental modem support that is outlined in #1958. I think that GNUtoo has plans to build a ROM that tests the oFono based modem support in the near future, but I'm not exactly sure when. Also, the link I provided above has changed and the images are now here: https://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/replicant/images/replicant-6.0/0004-rc1/

Hello green blue,

Thanks for your willingness to help with testing our release candidate images for all those devices! Please use the link in this post to access the ROM images. It'd be best if you could provide your feedback in this thread on our mailing list: https://lists.osuosl.org/pipermail/replicant/2020-January/002452.html We mainly are looking for bugs that aren't currently known that are show stoppers that would block us from releasing these Rom images for our next release.

In Solidarity,
Kurtis

Hi Kurtis

I thought #1958 sold this problem ... my bad.
Without any network, it's quite difficult to test this device. In addition, I don't have any dongle wifi which is compatible with replicant.

The only thing I can say is my phone randomly reboot. I don't know if it come from my device or replicant.

I can't wait to try replicant 9 :)

RE: Run some test on i9305 - Added by Kurtis Hanna 9 months ago

Hello Emmett Brown,

#1958 is related to the Note II only and the code and patches referenced there likely can also help the i9305, but the patches haven't been ported to work on the i9305 yet. When those patches get written we can then build Roms to see if the #1958 work can help make the LTE modem on the i9305 work.

Our hope is that #1834 is the reason why the reboots that are occurring and not a bug that we haven't documented yet. I'm actually curious though if the this disable modem script will stop the reboots after it is run on a i9305: https://git.replicant.us/replicant/vendor_replicant-scripts/tree/networking/modem/device-files/disable_modem.sh

The script is now on the device itself so the documentation on our wiki doesn't currently reflect the fact that the script doesn't need a PC or a git clone operation but our wiki's documentation should work nonetheless. Any chance you could disable the modem on your i9305 to see if the random reboots stop happening? https://redmine.replicant.us/projects/replicant/wiki/ModemDisable

Thanks so much for testing out the i9305 and providing your feedback! It may not seem like much, but we really do appreciate it. It should be noted that we enabled ethernet support via #1889 in this release candidate so you could do more testing of the phone that way. Please let us know if you have any questions about how to get that working.

In Solidarity,
Kurtis

Hi Kurtis !

I didn't find the script in my phone.
In the folder /data/misc, the folder "modem" didn't exist

So I created this folder, I downloaded scripts from de git replicant, and push them in the device with adb tool.
I didn't use the script "setup.sh" because he return me the error "Read-only system file".
ADB is configure as root.

There is no terminal emulator installed on my device, and without any network connection, I didn't was able to download it.

So I use adb shell tool to run the script, but I had an error

root@i9305:/data/misc/modem # ./disable_modem.sh
Remounting system partition as writable...
Disabling RIL...
mv: bad '/system/lib/libsamsung-ril.so': No such file or directory
RIL was already disabled.
Syncing filesystem...
Remounting system partition as read-only...
Syncing filesystem...
Modem will be disabled after we reboot now...
Starting: Intent { act=android.intent.action.REBOOT }

That system return "mv: bad '/system/lib/libsamsung-ril.so': No such file or directory"
"RIL was already disabled"
I guess it's normal because it doesn't exist on i9305

After using the script to disable the modem, I always have random reboot.
But how to be sur that the script really disable the modem ?

After that I run the script "enable-modem.sh"

For each script, the system reboot.

What do you think about that ?
If I have to do something more, tell me.
I can also send log if it's necessairy. Just tell me what to do.

Thanks

Emmett

I check the script.
Obviously, it only move libsamsung-RIL.so to libsamsung-RIL.so.disable

If it's the only action, how does this script could work on i9305 device which doesn't have this file ?

Hi Emmett,

The test was just a random idea that I had to try to prevent the reboots. I should have thought things through more before suggesting that you test the idea out. Sorry about that! Thanks so much for your quick feedback!

Kurtis

I wrote an overview of my understanding of the blockers for LTE support in Replicant 6 and 9 here: https://lists.osuosl.org/pipermail/replicant/2020-January/002465.html
