Pi Phone

Added by Ralph Feinnes over 8 years ago

Hi all,
Now that the raspberry pi is being used as a cellular phone, I wonder if perhaps anyone has given any thought getting replicant running on that platform?
Cheers

The Raspberry Pi is still not a very interesting platform, since it requires proprietary software to boot up (see: http://www.fsf.org/resources/hw/single-board-computers )
Thus, it's not very interesting for Replicant and there are better targets that would deserve some attention first!

I wish I had seen the FSF page before I bought the pi 2. Luckily there's a return policy. The $55 Beaglebone Black sounds more satisfactory so long as no closed source blobs are used.

My feeling is that using a platform that is meant to be open seems more practical to me than perpetually struggling to unlock, root and flash closed source devices like those from Raspberry or Samsung.

Surely you've noticed the tediousness in trying to get devices from Samsung et al to cooperate. Sure their CPUs are faster and screens bigger, but if it's not freedom- and privacy-friendly... who cares?

A benefit of using a Beaglebone might be that the $40 Adafruit cellular board connects via UART, so there is good isolation. Plus this combo would be a heck of a lot cheaper than the GTA04.
