ZaTab ZT2

zareason claims this is the first open and hackable tablet. Could Replicant be ported to it? It seems it is supported by Cyanogenmod as the first version of the tablet actually came with Cyanogenmod preinstalled. Here is the link to the tablet: https://zareason.com/shop/ZaTab-ZT2.html

I'm not sure the Allwinner A31 SoC is the best platform for freedom, but a port could be possible. I should port Replicant 4.2 to the Zatab ZT (first generation) at some point, so we'll see how this goes first. We also have many other targets in mind.

What are some of the more freedom-friendly devices you're looking at right now? I figured a tablet would be a good option since it doesn't have a modem that can activate the GPS. I know there is another tablet coming out called the Vivaldi. Would that be a better option?

The Allwinner A1x devices are much better actually. I don't know about the A31 and should ask again to someone aware of all the details about Allwinner platforms.

I too would like to see Replicant on the ZT2.

However the ZT2 isn't currently supported by Cyanogenmod.  Zareason is working on Cyanogenmod for the ZT2. However, it doesn't go to sleep yet so they haven't offered it yet.

Zareason recommends these github sources for hacking the ZT2:

https://github.com/linux-sunxi/linux-sunxi

https://github.com/christiantroy/allwinner_a31

In April 2013, Allwinner announced Rhombus Tech had the source for A31 U Boot and kernel

U-Boot

Kernel:

More information about the SoC can be found on Sunxi wiki:
http://linux-sunxi.org/A31

It is a bit confusing to read on the wiki page that the A31 isn't supported by the community.

Also Rhombus Tech has some info
http://rhombus-tech.net/allwinner/a31/

It also has why I like Allwinner SoC's:

"...the immediate support of Allwinner's Board of Directors for releasing full GPL Source Code, to help the RHT Initiative to foster better relations and closer ties with Free Software Developers."

Neal Peacock and the team at the now failed PengPod have also hacked on the A31 SoC for the Pengpod 1040.
