Samsung Galaxy Note 3 (n9000)

Added by Linus Drumbler over 10 years ago

The n9000 is the only version of this device with Exynos; all the others have Qualcomm platforms. Even so, this is a great, high-end device, with a 13 megapixel camera and an octa-core processor!

Yeah, they keep coming up with new versions, and we didn't have time to port to the Galaxy Note 2 yet. I'm not a big fan of consumerism so I really don't feel obligated to keep up to the last device Samsung makes. I know people at CyanogenMod are (or used to be) in a hurry to port it to the latest device in the shortest time, but this really isn't my approach. So I'll wait and see but on principle, such an Exynos device is doable.

I'm not a big fan of consumerism, either. But the fact is, our users are. If a user sees that their device is supported by Replicant, they may install it and convert to freedom. Every new device increases our number of users. And if we have lots of users, good things will happen.

Well, I think it's good to support a shitload of different devices for the sake of providing a lot of choice and for people who already have the devices indeed.
Though I'm not really seeing Replicant being popular as an objective. Often, project compromise on freedom because they are popular and want to become even more popular and what the masses are looking for is not really freedom but rather cutting-edge shiny new features. So I guess Replicant doesn't really aim to be popular.

Hey, no need to swear. There are plenty of other descriptive words: "plethora", "myriad", "menagerie", "number".

One could suppose that Replicant offers the shiniest new feature of all, perfect freedom. But users need more than that to be attracted to us, especially when we lack features as simple as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. So we need to give them hardware features by supporting high-end devices—and if not that, then make it convenient for them to install it on their device by supporting more devices.

You are right, I shouldn't swear on public discussions, sorry. I'm just a bit frustrated there are so many devices out there we don't have time to support.
I agree on your points but I really believe that Replicant success will always be limited because not so many people care about freedom. But if many do care, then it sure is a good thing and it will likely serve our cause!

The source code is out! Unfortunately, it looks like audio for this device depends on proprietary files. Nevertheless, once I finish the Optimus Black, I'd love to port to this device, or the international GSM Galaxy S4.

Is there any update on this? I'd really like to use replicant on my note3. Can I just use the note2 version?

As for using another version: http://www.replicant.us/about.php#not-listed-install

I don't have interest for working on this device, so I won't make it happen any time soon. Linus has given up on contributing technically. Any external contribution for this device is welcome, though.

Hey Paul, thanks for your efforts. I'm curious if you have a guess - how much work would you estimate remains for the Note 3? In developer months or something. :-)
