Samsung Galaxy Y (GT-S5360)

Added by Delphine Szymczak over 10 years ago

This thread was the closest : http://redmine.replicant.us/boards/27/topics/51 but my device has a single-SIM support.

I have a Samsung Galaxy Y (GT-S5360) and am interested in trying to get Replicant on it.

This is the device broadly : http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_y_s5360-4117.php

I found some details about the SoC here : http://www.sysphones.com/2011/12/samsung-galaxy-y-gt-s5360.html
CPU: Broadcom BCM21553 ARMv6, single core
GPU: Broadcom VideoCore IV

On IRC, user told me that there's nothing on the wiki about broadcom SoCs, and that I may have to get in touch with paulk or gnutoo.

He also found what looks to be a kernel for cyanogenmod https://github.com/broadcomCM/android_kernel_samsung_bcm21553-common and device files https://github.com/broadcomCM/android_device_samsung_bcm21553-common
I don't know if that can help in any way, but here is a short list of the unofficial Cyanogen ports for the device : http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Unofficial_Ports#Samsung_Galaxy_Y_.28GT-S5360.29

Let me know if more information is needed or if there is a logical next step to this. I have some unrelated programming/computer/android apps experience, but never tried anything linked to kernels or replicant.

I'm not Paul or GNUtoo, but they allow me to consider myself a developer, since I'm trying to port to a new device.

An unofficial CyanogenMod is a big disadvantage. There happen to be four ports for this particular device, and none of them seems to list the proprietary files required. Otherwise, this looks fine to me. Network type is GSM, Samsung devices have Heimdall for flashing and are fine for unlocked bootloaders, kernel source code available, SoC isn't Qualcomm or Tegra 2. Thoughts, Paul?

This is a very low-end device and I'm afraid graphics will be too slow. Even running Android > 2.3 may be compromised because of its technical specs. On a personal note, I really don't like the form factor it has so I won't chose it as a next target.

I'm coming back on this, and keeping in mind that my main purpose is to have a freer phone. Sorry for my ignorance.

How "slow" would it be if i tried porting Replicant 2.3 on this device? Are the technical specs really too low to even hope with a "lower number" version of Replicant? Currently running a samsung-custom version of android 2.3.6, i would be ok if the speed is roughly the same as I currently experience. I seem to have understood that Replicant 2.3 is based on/equivalent to Android 2.3 or Cyanogenmod 7, am I wrong?

This is a cheap device, and obviously there are limitations. If Replicant is inherently slower than any proprietary or other versions of the equivalent number, then I probably should let it go, but if not...

Replicant 2.3 is not maintained anymore, I'm not sure it even still builds. We are most certainly not going to release new images of it.
However, you might want to try and build your own cook of Replicant based on 2.3, but I'm really unsure I'll ever accept that back in official Replicant.

You're not. It is indeed based on the latest CyanogenMod 7 stable.

Usually, the lack of graphics acceleration provided by the GPU is made up for by the CPU, so it needs to be quite powerful, which is not the case on your device. However, the screen resolution is also very important, so it can still be usable. As usual, the only way to know for sure is to just try and see.
