Samsung Galaxy Grand DUOS (GT-I9082)

Added by Glenn McGrath about 10 years ago

This phone came to my attention because broadcom just announced (1) they are releasing the GPU source for it.
- BCM21553 SoC (2)
- Cortex A9 Dual 1.2GHz,
- 8 GB,
- 1 GB RAM,
- Released 21 January 2013 (still in production)

'Minimal' evaluation points
- It has an unofficial CyanogenMod port (3)
- I assume its like other Samsung phones in regard to flashing and signed bootloaders.
- There is a github page for the kernel and the device linked to from the cynagonmod page (also a big xda-developers thread which i had trouble makign sense of)
- Its GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900

'Good' target points
- The GPU driver source has been released, which is pretty significant i feel.
- The SoC specs mention an integrated camera, no mention of mem, GPS, audio.
- There are 113 proprietary files mentions by cynagenmod (4), including some related to GPS, camera and sound :(

Had trouble finding more hardware info out about it...

I suppose audio could work with some work (seems to be ALSA), camera could too (if the kernel interface is standard or easy to figure out).
GPS looks to be BCM4751. Modem protocol is not IPC, seems unknown.
On the XDA thread, this worries me: Does not work on 4.2 stock ROM's bootloader, please revert to 4.1 before flashing
Heimdall could work with the device.

Modem isolation is obviously non-existent here since the it's all in one chip (Broadcom even markets the SoC as a modem).

Bottomline: even though there is free graphics support, it's not any better than Qualcomm devices (which do have free graphics support as well, by the way).

Ok, thanks for looking into it anyway.
