S3 Mini?

Added by Klaus Lichtenwalder about 11 years ago

Hi,

there are (inofficial) CM ports as well as AOKP and PAC. I heard that there might be trouble with ST Ericsson, but I'm not deep enough involved in that, so I can't tell...

  • Unofficial CyanogenMod port is a big disadvantage
  • I could only find very few infos about the hardware: can you direct me to some kernel/device source code from the projects you mention?
  • S3 Mini probably has few users compared to other flagship devices, but on the other hand, it makes a low-end target

Sorry for my bad english

Paul,

Well, I read "The device must be supported by CyanogenMod officially (better) or via 3rd party repos" differently.... ;-)

Besides Maclaw's port there's also Oliver's port: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2384232
Actually, I don't know much about the situation of the hardware, and I'm afraid that this might pose a problem. But I'm no definitive source.

It's definitely no flagship, but loved very much by the owners, and I even think that the user base is not that low...

That's right, but that makes it harder. Basically, it means that if someone wants to do it, it'll be possible, but this is a drawback in our personal consideration of the device.

Maybe they should try to get their code merged in CM?

In any case, we already have our next few targets booked, so it won't be for now, but I'll get back to this topic when I'm actually searching for a new device!

Paul,
I think they are trying already.
Thanks for the answer, I'll follow the developmnet :-)

Hi guys,

I was wondering if there already is a Replicant rom for the S3 mini. If yes then I sure like to try it!

RE: S3 Mini? - Added by Paul Kocialkowski over 9 years ago

The Galaxy S 3 mini is not yet supported. See http://www.replicant.us/about.php#not-listed-install

http://system-on-a-chip.specout.com/l/1125/ST-Ericsson-NovaThor-U8420 says that

The ST-Ericsson NovaThor U8420 has a modem which is responsible for modulating analog signals, such as mobile broadband signals, in order to be processed by the CPU as digital data.

so, GSM modem and chipset are integrated, which means bad modem isolation?

Anyway. It has got official CyanogenMod support by now, also kernel source has been made available in Net.

Thx, that sounds promising!

The implication is correct.

Anyway. It has got official CyanogenMod support by now, also kernel source has been made available in Net.

Perhaps someone should take a closer look at it then, especially what blobs it needs.

ST-Ericsson sources (S3 Mini chipset is from Ericsson)

Looks like it has mainline u-boot and mainline kernel now, but seems to have signed first stage bootloader so I don't think TrustZone can be disabled. https://wiki.postmarketos.org/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S_III_mini_(samsung-golden)

mainline: https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/log/arch/arm/boot/dts/ste-ux500-samsung-golden.dts

u-boot: https://github.com/stericsson-mainline/u-boot/commits/master

postmarketOS: https://wiki.postmarketos.org/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S_III_mini_(samsung-golden)

I'm curious to find out if the NovaThor U8500 for sure has a signed bootloader or if it is unsigned.

Has a removable battery and 1GB Ram so it looks like if the bootloader is unsigned this might be a great target for us.

The GT-I8190 model that the above links apply to also seem to be somewhat available on ebay for how old it is: https://www.ebay.com/sch/9355/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=GT-I8190&_sop=15

I created an issue to add support for this device here: https://redmine.replicant.us/issues/2185
