Samsung I9300 Galaxy S3 what will work if you use non free software in combination with replicant?

Added by til sam almost 9 years ago

If this forum is only about free software then delete my post.

Samsung I9300 Galaxy S3. Wikipedia supported devices listing says, that the phone's 3d, gps, nfc are not supported. If replicant is flashed then you cannot make 3d, gps, nfc work, non free software or not? Wifi and bluetooth will work if non free software is flashed?

I hope I get your point, so you're asking how to get your stuff working with non-free software?
If so, please note that it's not recommended to use non-free binaries in any way. Also think over an usage of other ROMs (like CyanogenMod, OMNI, ...) if the comfort is more necessary to you than using free software.

But if you want to enable a specific functionality in Replicant with non-free software, you could bring the following to work:
  • Wi-fi (WLAN)
  • Bluetooth
  • GPS
  • 3D acceleration (OpenGL ES)
  • (on your device): front camera

And yes, NFC should work out of the box with free software.

As always: I don't want to provide how to merge non-free binaries exactly. Instead I would like to give you this link: http://code.paulk.fr/article16/missing-proprietary-firmwares-in-android-systems and hope you got to work whatever you want (or need), if you really want to do so.

Thanks. Can you answer, if you flash replicant and non free software drivers then privacy is not better than cyanogenmode?
It is not that I want the samsung galaxy s3. It is the only replicant compatible phone for sale. If replicant phones added non free software drivers are not better on privacy, than a cyanogenmode phone then the latter provides a bigger range of phones.
I thought that replicant and non free software drivers would provide a better privacy phone than a cyanogenmode phone.
If an only free software replicant phone was available, I would get one.

It depends. Some models have a firmware version recent enough to just work out of the box and some others need a (loaded) firmware update to work properly.

If you don't object <used> devices, there are some more in my eyes: http://redmine.replicant.us/projects/replicant/wiki/ReplicantStatus
And probably the "LG Optimus Black (P970)" is on that device-list in the future, too;

I thought that replicant and non free software drivers would provide a better privacy phone than a cyanogenmode phone.

Replicant originally started as a CyanogenMod with removed non-free binary parts. With many thanks to Paul Kocialkowski, Replicant provides some free replacements of feature parts, like on your device Samsung-RIL (http://redmine.replicant.us/projects/replicant/wiki/Samsung-RIL). The Replicant team also seems to have invested much time to make Replicant resistant against the expectation of non-free binaries, (so it shouldn't crash if the operating system is looking for some needed files, which are removed or replaced with free ones).
So if you put non-free parts back into Replicant, you just get CyanogenMod again, which can't probably can't cooperate in some parts with non-free files anymore, (because of the modifications) and so your system possibly becomes unstable.

IMHO, if you never mind using non-free software, why not just taking CyanogenMod? It's also available in a newer version, (at the moment AOSP v5.1.1, while Replicant is based on AOSP v4.2.2 [which is relevant in view of security reasons]).

But of course I don't want to discourage you from mixing Replicant with non-free software, for enthusiastic-, experimental- or whatever for other reasons. (By the way I made it, too [because: http://redmine.replicant.us/boards/9/topics/8325]).
Just be aware of what could possibly go wrong.

If an only free software replicant phone was available, I would get one.

So stay tuned for the https://my.neo900.org/ (which I sadly can't afford) and it's pretty sure upcoming Replicant support;

Thanks. When I say only free software then it is every piece of software on the computer. Therefore neo900 is not a free software phone. I have read they will provide software that is able to better warn about or prevent non free software from accessing the main system software. Like the blackphone. No computer but the gluglug has fsf approval. And I am not sure the approval includes the hdd. It should not.
In conclusion, you assess that nothing on privacy is gained if on same phone you flash replicant and non free hardware software or cyanogenmod?
I reckon most people on this forum dislike that no computer, except gluglug, and no phone is free software. If the librem was free software I would get one. It is not. Apparently free software users, know how and means are not present in volumes that we can get a free software computer and phone. About a phone can reverse engineering be done, would enough money to pay for it, be available? From what I have read I cannot determine if crypto sign keys are used, the source code can get established?
