Installing replicant on a galaxy a3: is it a good idea?

Added by Daniel Obrecht almost 7 years ago

Hello,

My father has a galaxy a3, somebody gave him… and android is really annoying, as expected.

Do you mean it's good to install replicant anyway? My father uses sms and phone, the other things are not important for him.

Hi,
SMS and "Phone" are already proven vulnerable/broken communication channels.
In his particular case, Replicant will not give him extra privacy, only a more clean and updated operating system.
To benefit the privacy he and his peers should start learning modern VOIP programs.

Hello!

Samsung Galaxy A3 is not in the list of supported devices for any current version of Replicant, so I wouldn't expect it to work as-is. Perhaps Replicant could be ported to the device, but it would likely take much work to do so. I don't know much about how Replicant (or Android) works though, so don't trust me entirely.

Replicant is built from LineageOS though, which is not entirely free, but should be less obnoxious than Android. They do not list the A3 as a supported device; all I found was a forum thread with some unofficial build for some variants of A3. I didn't verify its trustworthiness, but perhaps you'll want to take a look into it.
