Using adb to backup SMS and Contacts data prior to upgrade 4.2 -> 6.0

Added by George S almost 7 years ago

Hi,

I want to upgrade my Galaxy S2 to replicant 6.0. Prior to that I would like
to backup SMS and contacts data, preferably with adb as that is something I
am a bit aquainted with. Is there a way to do this with adb and if so, how do
I restore from within replicant 6.0 (assuming backup is on my debian PC)?

I have installed oandbackup from f-droid. Would that provide an alternative means
for the backup? Again here, if so: how to restore (oandbackup is pretty limited on
user documentation).

Kind regards + thanks in advance,

George

Hi George S,
if I understand well, the goal is the same as mine, I was answered that you can't do it just with oandbackup but some other solutions have been proposed here: https://redmine.replicant.us/boards/9/topics/14315
Perhaps they will help you.

Hi Fil Lupin (and others),

It took some time but I upgraded to v6 two weeks ago (actually bought another S2 as a guinea pig).
It turned out that my primary interest was to backup contact data and that could easily be achieved
by exporting contacts in v4.2 as a vcf file and store this externally. In v6 one can then import these
contacts from the vcf file.

So now I have two S2's with replicant v6 (and my contacts).

Kind regards,
George

Hi Fil,

No, I was mainly interested in not having to redefine my contacts after the upgrade. Backup and
import of SMS was not important to me as I rarely communicate deep (or other relevant) thoughts
that way :-).
Besides, from the link you sent me I got the impression that backup of both contacts and SMS is a
pretty complex business.

Kind regards,
George
