wifi REPLICANT 6.0

Added by CHRISTIAN PONCET almost 7 years ago

Hi,

I bought a external wifi for my S2 (TECHNOETHICAL).
It's not ok. REPWIFI don't find one. Maybe I move a setting, but I don't know witch one !
Could you give me a process (I m not an expert !).

Thanks a lot

Chris

Hi Christian,
I do not think you will find here support for wifi since there is no libre drivers for it, and so it is not supported for Replicant.

However, you can find some information on the wiki (https://redmine.replicant.us/projects/replicant/wiki/WiFi for example) and the forum about this (https://redmine.replicant.us/boards/3/topics/1437 for example).
Perhaps the use of the field upside right to look for "wifi" keyword can also help you..

There are libre drivers for the internal Wi-Fi. The firmware is non-free.

Chris is referring to the external Wi-Fi solution using an adapter for which a free firmware exists (WifiAdapter).

Chris, did you already go through the WifiAdapter page? Make sure that the battery is fully charged and after a reboot, try again attaching the adapter. It hopefully works then.

Hi

Thanks for your answers.
I'm back from holidays.
Read and read again your answer and wiki, seem easy... But I'm hopeless !!

I try different thinks :

  • to reconnect basic network : REPWIFI identified my WIFI (adress IP) but there is a message "failed to connect". I use NETGEAR.
  • I change in developer options : root / apps only.
  • I took away the sim card to be sure to work with wifi.

I succeeded to have an internet connexion once.... but I didn't understand why F-DROID wasn't connected (it's an over question !)

The SAMSUNG S2 is more unstable : https://redmine.replicant.us/projects/replicant/wiki/WifiAdapter. Is it irrevocable ?

Should I install REPLICANT 4.2 ?
Should I install again REPLICANT 6.0 with last correction ?

Thank you. Try to be clear, i'm not expert.

See you

Chris

Oops, sorry for my misunderstanding, and thank you Wolfgang for correcting my comment. :)

Hi

Hi Christian,

Unfortunately, I9100 is known to be unstable with external dongles attached to it.
As you probably read in the wiki, the cause is most likely the battery which is too weak to provide the dongle with enough power.
As a result, crashes can happen while trying to connect, or simply connection may fail.

  • to reconnect basic network : REPWIFI identified my WIFI (adress IP) but there is a message "failed to connect". I use NETGEAR.

That message message typically means that one of the shell commands issued by RepWifi while connecting has failed.
It could at all be the case that association with the Access point has succeeded (hence you got an IP address), but subsequent commands have failed (e.g. getting a gateway), so no useable connection has been established.

  • I change in developer options : root / apps only.

That's a needed step, in order for RepWifi to work, because it needs root access.

  • I took away the sim card to be sure to work with wifi.

No need to do that.

I succeeded to have an internet connexion once.... but I didn't understand why F-DROID wasn't connected (it's an over question !)

This is known behaviour, documented in Issue #1792. I'm currently working on that, and I hope my patches will be available in the next official Replicant 6.0 release.

The SAMSUNG S2 is more unstable : https://redmine.replicant.us/projects/replicant/wiki/WifiAdapter. Is it irrevocable ?

Probably yes, unfortunately.
On the other hand, there are at least 2 devices known to work pretty good with external dongles, which are i9300 (samsung S3) and the N7100 (Note 2).

Should I install REPLICANT 4.2 ?

Nope. That's not a good idea. That is an old version, reaching EOL. Furthermore RepWifi doesn't support Replicant 4.2, and likely it won't be supporting it in the future.
On the wifi side, active development is being made in Replicant 6.0 only.

Should I install again REPLICANT 6.0 with last correction ?

You should definitely keep your version of Replicant up to date, whenever a new release comes out. That is general good practice.
Also, I'm confident that better wifi support will be included in the next release.

Thank you. Try to be clear, i'm not expert.

No worries!
If you find you need more details, or if my answer wasn't clear, please feel free to ask!

See you

Chris

Bye
