SIM Card Not Recognised (GT-N7100) [SOLVED]

Added by Hephaestus Aitnaios about 7 years ago

Hello everyone,

I am trying to install Replicant 6.0 on a GT-N7100. I followed all the instructions successfully, until the point where I have to copy the files to the device. Because the device is running Android 4.4.2, I cannot enable USB mass storage, so I decided to use the ADB tool to perform sideload. I installed ADB successfully via the apt-get command, and I also successfully enabled USB debugging via the Developer options. I have the phone connected as a media device (MTP), and I am using its internal storage.

I opened a Terminal window and ran adb devices, which listed the device. I then ran the following command: adb push [Replicant .zip file] [/data/media/0]. This gave me a permission denied error. Then, I replaced the [/data/media/0] with [/internalstorage/] and ran it, but closed Terminal because I figured that that would not work.

Clearly, I am a very novice user of the Terminal. I am running Trisquel 7.

I would greatly appreciate it if you could tell me how to proceed.

Thanking you in advance,
Hephaestus

EDIT (28/10/2017): The main issue now of this thread is the fact that the SIM Card is not recognised in the GT-N7100 running the latest image of Replicant.

EDIT (07/02/2018): I solved the SIM card issue by installing another custom ROM (from the XDA Developers website) and then re-installing the latest image of Replicant.

EDIT: I tried pushing the .zip file to /storage/emulated/0 (I found this path from the My Files program), but it gave me an error that it is a Read-only file system.

EDIT: It seems that it is not necessary to transfer the replicant-6.0-n7100.zip file at this stage, so I proceeded to prepare the device, which I did successfully. When it came, though, to install the recovery image to the device, I ran the command, but it told me that it could not connect to it. By the way, I am running Trisquel in a virtual machine (VBox), and I had the phone connected to it via Devices > USB, but it would not appear to be connected in the system.

Hi,

there are various possible issues in your case.

The quick and dirty solution would be to use an SD card, if you have one:
you could completely avoid adb sideload by putting the .zip image on the card using a card reader.
Then you put the sd card inside your phone, and select the .zip from there, in the recovery.

If you don't have any SD card:
before trying the sideload, try doing:

adb root

this can help you get around permission problems.

If sideload does not work, it could be related to an old issue with a certain version of adb.
Unfortunately I can't remember exactly what was the version and how to solve the issue..
Please, post the result of

adb version

maybe someone can help you with that issue.

Also, if you have time to do so, please search in the forums for "adb sideload" to see if you can retrieve old posts about that.

[EDIT]
I've been able to find a link to an ADB binary provided by the Replicant project itself.
It should solve some sideload issues:
https://redmine.replicant.us/projects/replicant/wiki/ToolsInstallation#ADB
Please, try to use that binary instead of the one that comes with Trisquel, and tell us if it works.
[END EDIT]

Another possible cause could be the virtual machine environment not redirecting adb through USB properly.. but I'm just speculating on that..

I'm sorry but I'm not able to give you further advice..

Hello Fil,

After much trouble, I, with the help of another on the #replicant IRC, eventually managed to install Replicant, albeit with different recovery software.

The issue now is that Replicant does not recognise my SIM card.

How do I fix this?

Thank you,
Hephaestus

More information can be found in the #replicant IRC.

I'm glad you made it! :)

The issue now is that Replicant does not recognise my SIM card.

How do I fix this?

There are three different (posisbly related) issues about that:
Issue #1783
Issue #1701
Issue #1824

Even my own SIM card is affected by the issue, but I still haven't got it working..
But a few people reported they had solved it somehow.
Try to have a look into the linked issues, and to this forum post

Thank you,
Hephaestus

You're very welcome!

Hello Fil,

I installed every single build of Replicant that is supported by my device, but none of them recognised my SIM card. By the way, my SIM card worked fine on the official Samsung ROM.

I changed the permissions, which were wrong, to those mentioned here: https://redmine.replicant.us/issues/1800#note-6, but that did not fix the issue.

I also have the same line in my radio log as in this post: https://redmine.replicant.us/issues/1783#note-19.

How do you recommend that I proceed?

Thanking you in advance,

Hephaestus

At least one user has reported that after fixing the permissions, it was necessary to flash a stock Android ROM and then re-flash Replicant. No idea why this would help, but reportedly it has helped.

Hello Jeremy,

I do not have access anymore to a stock Samsung ROM, as the installation wiki never mentioned that a backup was necessary.

Do you know where I could find one?

Thank you,
Hephaestus

There are websites that offer stock Samsung device ROMs, but I'm unimpressed with their security (many don't even have TLS). Looking at my notes, I find the following links, but I cannot vouch for any of these in any way, and I cannot be held responsible if they contain malware or cause device damage:

https://samsung-updates.com/device/?id=GT-I9300
https://kernel.boeffla.de/sgs3/stock-kernel/
http://www.android-hilfe.de/thema/efsv2-modem-thread.508822/

(Moderators are welcome to remove the links if there's a problem related to forum rules that I'm unaware of.)

Hello Jeremy,

Are you familiar with SamMobile (e.g. https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/galaxy-note-/GT-N7100/)? Are their ROMs legitimate?

Thank you,
Hephaestus
