A few remarks after installing replicant on a nexus s

Added by J Wallander over 10 years ago

Hi,
I just installed replicant (4.0/0004 ) on a brand new Nexus S. Fastboot installation went smoothly.

After the installation, I noticed the following :
  • still got a Google Logo at boot ( just before the replicant logo shows up)
  • f-droid seems to start at boot and crashes, though you can run f-droid afterwards. Problem solved after updating f-droid ( 0.46 -> 0.50)
  • I was a bit surprised to find out the google search bar widget on home screen ( it seems Google search is still the system default search engine )
  • I cannot set a "live" wallpaper ( every live wallpaper crashes)
  • Firefox (21,22,23 either downloaded from f-fdroid or from mozilla website) does not work : every webpage is blank ( although web pages thumbnails) are ok
  • Maybe I miss it, but there is no file manager. As I have no wifi, I started downloading apk files from my computer, I copied them to the phone, but found out there was no way to install the apk from the phone itself. Problem solved after installing a file manager from f-droid using the 3g network.

I forgot : you must create an account before using the calendar app and adding events.
You may use the "offline calendar" app (f-droid) to create a local account calendar for that purpose.

  • Google logo is the bootloader splash, Samsung Galaxy users see the Samsung bootsplash, that's alright
  • F-Droid will be updated in the next Replicant 4.0 release to fix this problem
  • Google still is the default engine, though it won't track you unless you actually use it
  • Live wallpaper crash is because of the limited EGL support, nothing we don't already know, same for Firefox
  • You can install plenty of File Managers from FDroid
  • We are looking for someone to write a calendar provider that can store things locally and import iCal files for Replicant, see Tasks

Ok thanks.

F-Droid will be updated in the next Replicant 4.0 release to fix this problem

Is there any documentation on updating an already existent replicant installation ? ( in particular which files should be flashed, and which should not)

too bad for firefox. I did not find any information on this issue on the web , nor could I find if a workaround exists.

I just donated some money to the project on the fsf website ( I'm afraid my programming skills are well below average)

We assume any new installation requires wiping the user data (but not the sdcard -- internal or not). In fact, if you update from the same version of Replicant, you can spare reflashing userdata.img or wiping data, though you'll need to do it if you encounter any issue next (and we won't accept what you experience as proper bugs).
