Flashing recovery.img with Heimdall - libusb error: -7 (Galaxy S3)

Added by Anonymous over 9 years ago

Hello,

First of all, thank you Paul for all the work you put into Replicant.

I have just bought a new Galaxy S3 in order to install Replicant. I followed the install guide provided. I checked the signatures of the downloaded files and the MD5 sum and everything went right. The problem occurs when I am in downloading mode, ready to flash the recovery.img with Heimdall.

I attached the log of the terminal when trying to flash the recovery.

I have searched for several hours and I cannot figure out how to fix this. The libusb error: -7 is a timeout error (as stated on http://libusb.sourceforge.net/api-1.0/group__misc.html#ggab2323aa0f04bc22038e7e1740b2f29efa9b000ac2e6dc4ac864c59579dd08c8bd). I tried to change the cable and use another usb port on my laptop but it did not change anything.

If I can't find a solution here, I'll consider signing up on GitHub and reopen a past similar issue (marked as solved) or using some program on Windows (bleh) to install Replicant.

Thank you.

Well, that is a frequent issue. Somehow, there are always a few binaries that produce USB issues and some that work -- try to find ones that work from ToolsInstallation.

I was getting similar errors with the release version (1.4.0, in Debian unstable) on the S4 i9500. It seemed to be a regression of an old bug that resurfaced right before that release. Try building Heimdall from the latest github source (might need to obtain a newer libusb too, from what I remember) and give it another shot.

Hello,

Thank you very much for your answers. I actually found out that the supposed Galaxy S3 (9300) that I bought and which was labelled as a 9300 is a 9301 (Galaxy S3 Neo). The phone being different (as mentioned somewhere else on the forum), Replicant cannot be flashed on it. So I sent the phone back.

I am quite disappointed as it is incredibly hard to find a new Galaxy S3 9300. There are only 9301 everywhere. Maybe I'll try to go for a Note 2. At the same time, I ave hopes for the 2015 fairphone but there is no guarantee that Replicant could and will be ported to it.

Anyway, thank you for your answers. I'm still hoping to get Replicant soon on my phone.

I wouldn't count on it too much indeed.
