Galaxy Note 2 n7100 not working

Added by Hugh Mayfield over 9 years ago

Hi all,

Just tried installing Replicant on the above. It reported successful installation, but when booted then phone gets no further than the red-robot-on-skates splash screen. Have tried regressing the install to R 4.2 0002 as opposed to 0003; did not make any difference. Have waited 5-10 mins; the splash screen still shows. Have restarted several times.

Any thoughts welcome.

Perhaps you simply forgot to wipe data in recovery. That's usually the reason why first boot won't complete.

Thanks Paul. Have tried the data wipe, which didn't make any difference. Will try:

  • checking that I have correct version of device
  • getting main logs from ADB
  • wipe cache partition
  • if necessary, build an eng kernel.

and report back.

With the phone not operational, I'm not sure how to check which version I have. The sticker under the battery says:

Model: GT-N7100
FCC ID: A3LGTN7100
SSN: N7100GSMH
IMEI: ***
S/N: RV1D35X2E4F.

Is there anything there that could help pin down the exact variant? The Wikipedia page lists lots of variants with no way of identifying which is which; a Startpage search left me none the wiser.

As an additional possible complication, the device was purchased in China, and I am located in the UK.

I will continue looking into the logs and cache partition.

Well, it looks like the model is alright (actually, if it boots up to the Replicant logo, there is a good chance device compatibility is not the problem).
You might want to hide the IMEI by the way, it is not supposed to be made public.

Did you get another community Android version running on the device before installing Replicant? If so, perhaps try installing it back and see if it still works.
Also, you could try to mount all the different partitions from recovery to ensure that there is no problem with the internal storage memory (failure at mounting a partition may prevent the system from going further in the boot process).

If ADB works, it would still be the easiest way to figure out what is going on here.

Thanks Paul. Have concealed the IMEI.

Haven't tried other Androids, will try CM.

Regarding mounting the partitions, will try this and ADB and report back.

Installed cm-11-20150103-NIGHTLY-n7100.zip, wiped and rebooted. Fifteen to twenty minutes later, it's still displaying the CM splash screen.

Will look at the other suggestions ASAP.

It looks like there may be an issue with the device (the other suggestions will help figure out what exactly). What working installation was there before Replicant?

OK Paul, thanks. The standard Samsung software was running OK before. Will progress suggestions.

Sorry to resurrect old thread. Losing my S3 has catalysed doing something about this. Hope people don't mind.

I mounted all the partitions in recovery - no problem.

Tried "adb logcat" - it just says "waiting for device" endlessly (did this in recovery).

Tried installing cm-10.1.3 - no change.

The device was purchased in China - would that make any difference?

It could be -- for instance if it was labelled as N7100 but had different hardware. In any case, if CyanogenMod doesn't work, there isn't much I can do. However, the fact that it goes up to the boot logo indicates that it's not totally different. If data wipe doesn't change anything, I have very few suggestions left.

Paul - thanks for all you have done. Maybe I will see if the CM people have any ideas.
