Installation on S3 GT-I9300

Added by E D almost 9 years ago

Hello,

I finally could get one samsung S3 I9300, many sellers seem to sell samsung S3, claiming it is the I9300,
but when you receive them you discover it is the I9301i or i535 or ...

I looked at the label behind the battery, it shows "model : GT-I9300", so does the smartphone itself
when I ask for its model name in the "Legal information".

Nevertheless, the I9300 replicant page shows that the supported model is "GSM I9300",

so what's the point ? can I install replicant on this smartphone (with at least telephony working) ?

Best regards

You have the correct device for Replicant (including telephony), the GT-I9300. Technically is no such model as a "GSM I9300", but the "GT I9300" is a GSM phone so that name could be used interchangeably, as the wiki writer did.

Hello,

Thanks for your answeer, I was pretty sure of that, but as a newbie I prefered to have this confirmed.

I have a few questions about the installation process :
- I can see the Volume Up/Down and Power buttons on each side but what is the "Select" button ?
- do I need to run heimdall as root ?
- does the smartphone need its SIM card ?
- the host system is ubuntu 14.04.2 ; is there any problem with the heimdall version (1.4.0-2) ? or anything else ?
- in the command :
"heimdall flash --BOOT path/to/recovery.img --RECOVERY path/to/recovery.img"
this means that the current system will be saved in path/to/recovery.img so that I may come back
with the current system if anything went wrong during the replicant installation ?
- in the wiki, it is said that no non-free software are shipped,
does it mean that, after replicant installation, I need to retrieve and install other parts
in order to make the telephony and/or wifi work ?

Thanks in advance for your help

Best regards

The select button is the big rectangular button the the face of the device just below the display.

- do I need to run heimdall as root ?

Yes. It will not flash without sudo.

- does the smartphone need its SIM card ?

No (unless you want telephony or over the air internet).

- the host system is ubuntu 14.04.2 ; is there any problem with the heimdall version (1.4.0-2) ? or anything else ?

No problems with installing Replicant using ubuntu and its derivatives in my experience.

- in the command :
"heimdall flash --BOOT path/to/recovery.img --RECOVERY path/to/recovery.img"
this means that the current system will be saved in path/to/recovery.img so that I may come back
with the current system if anything went wrong during the replicant installation ?

No. This command does not backup anything. The stock 'recovery' (software for lower level phone maintenance) that comes with the phone is too limited to install replicant so this command is to put a custom recovery on the phone with more options. If you want to back up the current system there is an option to do so from the custom recovery.

- in the wiki, it is said that no non-free software are shipped,
does it mean that, after replicant installation, I need to retrieve and install other parts
in order to make the telephony and/or wifi work ?

Telephony works by default. Wifi does not and requires non-free software. So I've never tried to get wifi to work since that would mean installing proprietary code, contrary to the purpose of Replicant.

Thanks for your answeer

Just to be sure : no problem if I leave the SIM card in its place ?

For the wifi, I would like however to be able to use it, is it easy to install the non-free software ? and where to get it ?

Best regards
