galaxy S2 successful installation

Added by Frédéric Lochon over 6 years ago

Hello,

I'm now running replicant !

I was looking for a replacement for my old Nokia E72 for quite a long time. But couldn't choose between an Android device (mainly because there are too much google stuff), an Apple device (because of Apple) and a Nokia/Microsoft device (too much Microsoft stuff).
I could have choosen Sailfish devices, but availability is very limited in France.

I discovered recently replicant, and was quite surprised that some devices were almost fully functional running only FLOSS.

Even more recently, I got an old galaxy S2 (for free, thanks to a friend) and I decided to switch.

So, I wanted to give some feedback about the installation.

When I used heimdall, the KERNEL partition flashing was done without any issue.
I didn't know how long the process was supposed to be, but it was quite fast (few seconds).

Then, I tried to apply the update from the external sdcard.
The update process started and failed at some point telling something like "failed to verify whole file signature". After checking on my computer, the file was still OK.
I started again, with same failure.

So, I tried to use adb sideloading.
The first time, the upload stopped at 47% and I rebooted.
I started one more time, and it stopped again at 47%... but I waited few more minutes, and it succeeded !

After reboot, I got the replicant logo (that was great to see that...), and I waited few minutes waiting something to happen.
Then application were "configured" during few more minutes.

After that, the phone was quite hot (probably about 60 °C in one corner) and I could start enjoying replicant !

That would probably be interesting to give some duration in the installation procedure to avoid surprises.

Anyway, I'm running replicant for few hours and I'm quite happy with it.
I don't have wifi, BT or GPS, but that's OK, the phone can make phone calls, send SMS, browse the web, get emails and sync my calendars and contacts. That's all I need.

To be honest I would prefer to have GPS, but that's OK for now.
Maybe I'll search for some alternative in the next few weeks/months.

Welcome aboard, Frédéric!

As for WiFi, your phone should be able to drive external dongles, to be used together with RepWifi.
WiFi on i9100 is not as stable as on i9300, but when the battery is full it can be quite usable, so I'd give it a try ;)
Please, have a look at the WifiAdapter wiki page, to get more details.

I know that someone had some success with external GPS adapters, you could maybe try a search to get more info.

That said, welcome aboard!
