Maybe we will get the Galaxy s3 i9305 working before that happens. Or maybe we can run Replicant on the Librem 5. It will support LTE.

A friend of mine, who's also an active member of Replicant's community (namely: Kurtis Hanna), is willing to do some experiments with VoIP apps and internet-based messaging apps, to completely get rid of modem's functionality in favour of an all-internet-based setup.
He plans to do so, by using WiFi features, together with a portable "mobile access point".
That setup still depends on a non-free device for connectivity, but with the huge difference that the device is physically isolated from the phone, and has no hardware access to it.
Furthermore, by routing calls and messages through the internet, we can make use of end-to-end encryption, so that no external device can spy on the communication.
This is to say:
maybe we can plan ahead, and get rid of 2G/3G before they get rid of us :)
