close the forum

Added by til sam over 5 years ago

There is almost no activity on the forum. Therefore replicant should close the forum. If
a person finds his way to replicant's forum it is not good enough if he meets
no one who answers his questions or react on his posts.
An email list would be appropriate because of the number of replicant people.

On irc a message should say, do not expect any response here.

I understand how people can feel about not getting answers to their questions..

But...

I think what you say is not completely true..
If you look at the "latest posts" section you can easily see there's some pretty recent activity, and some of the most recent questions have received answers, or at least pings from Kurtis and/or Joonas.

While it is true that our community is not quite as active as other distros, that's simply a consequence of having a very small user base and an even-smaller developers/maintaners group.

Still, my personal view is that most of the unanswered questions could find their answers in the general documentation available in the wiki.
Other more general android-related questions are easily solvable with a quick search around the internet.

As I previously said, answering users' questions with complete and sensible replies is a time-and-energy consuming task (ever tried?).
My personal feeling as a "technical user" is to prioritize the most complex and interesting questions, when I rarely have the time to answer.
I can't speak for anybody else, but I sense this could probably be the reason for most easy and less complex questions remaining unanswered.

I previously gave a more elaborated explanation in a thread you opened some time ago,
here: https://redmine.replicant.us/boards/33/topics/14819?r=14839#message-14839
and here: https://redmine.replicant.us/boards/33/topics/14819?r=14848#message-14848

Well, my points have not changed..

Finally, to comment your request, all in all, I think closing the forum is far from being a reasonable choice.

I agree with Fil that we shouldn't close the forum. The response rate here isn't amazing, but it is a place for people to interact with Repliant that don't know or want to use IRC or our issue tracker. I'll try to respond more to the forum posts in the future.

It is also important to note that we already have an email list here: https://lists.osuosl.org/mailman/listinfo/replicant

It is not about me if that is what you believe. If a person new to replicant gets to this
forum and discovers this forum is not active he may refrain from replicant. He may
think the replicant software has been abandoned too. If no one new shows up here then
my argument is not valid. I do not like email lists. But they are better suited for
small group communication. Do people use the email list? I assumed they do. If
so it is better if people experience an active email list than a pretty much
closed down replicant forum.

Is the forum not a significant cost to replicant? Then replicant should save itself
the cost.

Or can you synchronize posts between the email list and the replicant forum?

Disclaimer:
what follows is my own personal opinion only. I do not speak for Replicant as a project.

Your assumption about the forum being inactive is simply not true. And me replying to you is the thing that proves you wrong.

small group communication. Do people use the email list? I assumed they do. If

Please don't assume your preferences are everybody else's preferences.
You are free to chose whatever mean you see fit for your needs. So does anybody else. And the forum is here to stay, so that if somebody has a legitimate and valuable question, she can probably still get an answer in the forum.

Is the forum not a significant cost to replicant? Then replicant should save itself
the cost.

It's not a monetary cost. It's about time. Closing the forum would not save a single dollar.
For sure it would save the time I spend replying to insinuations about our project being dead.
Still, closing the forum would mean that people with legitimate questions would have one less mean to be helped. So, again: no, the forum will not be closed.

Or can you synchronize posts between the email list and the replicant forum?

You can adjust your account settings to receive updates via email, when somebody posts on threads you are interested to.
