United States Carriers?

Added by Mark Hokanson over 10 years ago

I am sure this has been asked answered a few times, but for the life of me, I can't find it on the wikis or existing forums.

I am very excited about Replicant. The problem is, is that I am located in the United States and it appears Replicant has only been developed for devices in markets other than North and South America. I did see that the currently supported phones are on GSM networks, but I believe only European and Asian versions of those devices will allow Replicant to work. Am I wrong about this or will Replicant work on the GSM carriers in the US? I am currently on a CDMA carrier (Verizon) but would switch to AT&T quickly if it meant that I could get Replicant working.

So, basically the question is, will Replicant work on any of the US version of the devices? If so, which devices and which carriers for those devices will work with replicant? Perhaps, that would be a good thing to have on the wiki pages with the devices; list of carriers known for it to work with.

I am a developer, but not a hardware developer. Normally, I would pick it up and contribute by getting it working on my devices. Alas, however, I wouldn't know where to begin with development smartphones.

Replicant only supports GSM versions of the devices so far, as you spotted out. Some phones were reported to work with the GSM versions in the US: the GSM versions are actually international versions, not European versions, so they should work as well. However double check that the device number (e.g. GT-I9300) is the exact same as the one on the devices pages on our wiki!

Hi Paul and thanks for all your hard work.

Over the last year I've become very interested in open source and free software. I am dying to install Replicant on my phone as well and have spent quite a bit of time browsing and reading about it. This thread has brought me a little closer to my answer. I am currently using a US T-Mobile version of the Samsung Galaxy S3 (SGH-T999) and was wondering if you've gotten any feedback about others being able to successfully install Replicant on this phone. Since this thread is 4 months old, I thought I'd give it a shot.

Thanks again and all my best.

Okay apparently, there is a misunderstanding (that is very often seen) here. One cannot simply install Replicant on the device and see what works. We have to provide per-device images (kernel and system) which are built especially for the device. There is no generic Replicant version like it's the case in the x86 world!

Your device is not support, that means it's not possible to install Replicant on it, unless you work on adding support for your device and building the images for it.
