Does exist any full free software phone?

Added by Andi Andi over 9 years ago

Hello Paul and others,

I was just wondering if there is exist maybe any old phone that manufacturer release full source code of all drivers and OS?
Any old Nokia or any Symbian device?
Such documentation or source code could maybe somehow help better understand how phone and all mobile protocol works.
Forgive me if this question was somehow not smart, I do not have technical education, but started not long ago programming and no clue how to understand this topic well. Jumping directly to Replicant or Android source code seems to difficult.

Thank you in advance for any hint.

BR,

Andi

Well, I don't know of any device that was released with a fully free image preinstalled, except perhaps the Openmoko Neo FreeRunner or the http://www.gta04.org/.
Nokia and Symbian devices have never shipped with a fully free system. Perhaps the N900 could come close to fully free with SHR, but it's not supported anymore and still has proprietary bootloaders nevertheless.

If you are interested in understanding all this, there is already a lot of code available at Replicant (for instance, take a look at Samsung-RIL).
Wikipedia usually has a precise description of how all of this works together, especially on the network operator side.
