Internal Storage not Encrypted - I9100 running Replicant 6
Added by Steven Michael over 7 years ago
I I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 I9100 running Replicant 6. I have encrypted the device plugged in and I let it do it's thing until I was asked for the password.
I notice when I booted into recovery without giving the encryption password, everything in Internel Storage was decrypted and you can see everything. All my files, pictures, music.
Is this a bug, a silly feature? Can I fix this?
I found online that Android 3 and 4 would only encrypt /data. Is this true for Android/Replicant 6?
Edit:
I just did a check and statement eariler is right, Only /data is encrypted on my device possibly my device type? which sucks balls. Is there a way aroud this? Can I change the partition map somehow?

Looks like you already found the thread discussing a potential patch for this. Yes, unfortunately, this is an issue with the default partition layout of the Galaxy S2 and Galaxy Note.
Another potential workaround could be to use an SD card as emulated storage. When you insert an SD card, a menu should pop up that guides you through the process of formatting the SD card as internal storage. Then it will be encrypted as well. You could try to move the data from the internal SD card partition to this virtual storage. However, it may not be guaranteed that some new data isn't still written to the internal unencrypted SD card partition.

Maybe it would be a good idea to edit https://www.replicant.us/freedom-privacy-security-issues.php#recommendations so that it doesn't recommend the S2 over the phones that don't have this issue?

The order of recommendation depends on how much works out of the box with Replicant on the device. The S 2 has more firmware preinstalled on the chips which e.g. makes the front camera work. And I think it was the fastest device with Replicant 4.2 and software rendering. Now with Replicant 6.0, I'm not so sure anymore which one is the fastest.
But you are right. With the current situation, it would be good to have a hint either there or in the advice section below that clarifies the encryption problem with the S 2 and Note.

Is this still a problem with Replicant 6? Where to find a proper PIT to minimize the security risk? Or will this security risk be gone when I just remove the XML attribute
primaryStorageUuid="primary_physical
in
/data/system/storage.xml
?
