Video on Replicant phones?

Added by Tom Lukeywood over 8 years ago

its possible for a Gameboy color to play video at a decent quality:

so even without a GPU is it not realistic for Replicant to play video files with free software?

and i have seen a video of replicant running and playing videos fine:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RX82UbLe6Ak

the weird thing is i can play video on the phones using a game boy advanced emulator:

so i know its possible to play video on the phones

why is it that Replicant 4.2 can not play video files?

Have you seen this post: http://redmine.replicant.us/boards/9/topics/8163?r=9033#message-9033
With VLC I got a very smooth playback with videos <= 540p on my i9100 @ Replicant 4.2...

How did you do it?

is it possible without blobs?

How did you do it?

I just installed the VLC media player from the F-Droid link above (in the armeabi-v7a version).
Additionally I switched Settings -> Performance -> Force video chroma -> from YUV [_] to RGB 32-bit [X] to avoid wrong colors and/or artifacts in some videos on my device.

is it possible without blobs?

Well, I just can say that F-Droid generally doesn't allow blobs and don't give any optional non-free hint for this app, too.
So I personally would say yes, (but don't have researched/proved this in detail).

i cant find the setting Force video chroma
what Replicant version are you running?

i cant find the setting Force video chroma

Sorry to be unclear on this point. The settings can't be found within the Replicant settings; I meant the settings inside the VLC-app.
Just open VLC, click on the symbol on the left upper corner -> Settings -> Performance -> Force video chroma...
But this step is optional. Please try if you notice problems on playing videos on your device, too before you switch this setting.

sorry to keep asking questions

but is there any way you could record video using Replicant
or is this not yet possible?

sorry to keep asking questions

Please just go ahead, I think a forum is made for that reason シ

but is there any way you could record video using Replicant
or is this not yet possible?

Well, it seems to be a little bit harder to get this to work on Replicant.
You could find the core answer here:

If you want to use proprietary software, this patch (for the i9300) looks promising:
http://lists.osuosl.org/pipermail/replicant/Week-of-Mon-20150921/000804.html
(please also look at the 'next messages' from this mailing-list-thread).
If you have another hardware, you or somebody else could try to port this patch to your hardware.

Again, I fear there is no instant solution for video encoding on Replicant, sorry.
