Firefox crashes / Bad Performance on Galaxy S3

Added by John Doe almost 8 years ago

Hello there

I got Replicant 4.2 installed on my Galaxy S3 and got some questions about it.

First of all, the OS is very "laggy" and slow. Is there any way to improve this?

And my second, more important question: Unfortunately neither Orfox nor Firefox works in Replicant, they both crash at startup.

The second issue is the main reason why I would actually consider CM over Replicant. I got no problem with the missing support for the front cam (i actually like it) and wifi and if there is no way to improve performance of the OS i would still prefer Replicant. But since I really want to use Orfox, this issue keeps pushing me back to CM. Is there a workaround?

Thanks in advance

Why not trying Replicant 6.0, (e. g. for security reasons)?

This build has some laggs, too. But overall it's smoother in my eyes.

And my second, more important question: Unfortunately neither Orfox nor Firefox works in Replicant, they both crash at startup.

That's the evergreen question. This is because of the incomplete EGL implementation: http://redmine.replicant.us/issues/705
And the Mozilla community also doesn't seem to be too much interested on a fix for this: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=778175#c37

IMHO, the best choice is the Lightweight browser on Replicant 6.0 for the moment. Additionally you should consider to disable "Settings -> General Settings -> Enable JavaScript [_]", for security reasons, but with this you should expect some misbehavior on some sites...

Or just look around for alternatives like Privacy Browser

In my case, the cam just works on Replicant 6.0, and you could try to get stuff like wifi to work with the firmware files (https://code.fossencdi.org/i9300_proprietary_firmwares.git/) but of course, this isn't recommended because they're binary blobs...

But since I really want to use Orfox, this issue keeps pushing me back to CM. Is there a workaround?

Please look above for the workaround. The Lightning browser also could handle TOR (Orbot) connections. But for now, there is no free way to get Firefox (and clones) to work on Replicant, sorry.

You can use Orbot to proxy any application through Tor, by enabling 'transparent proxying' (requires root) and then selecting whatever app to proxy through the Tor network. Keep in mind that you should at the very least disable JavaScript in order to stay anonymous.
Also, try various different Mozilla-based browsers, for example, IceCat and Fennec F-Droid (to get the latest versions of Fennec enable the F-Droid archive in 'repositories'), which might not take advantage of the nonfree parts. It probably won't work but it is worth a shot.

Using TOR/VPN and or disabling JavaScript doesn't means that you're not trackable or "stay anonymous"; it just makes it harder...
The root cause is your browser fingerprint: http://redmine.replicant.us/boards/39/topics/9093 (including your browsing-behavior and many other indicators, which doesn't need JavaScript to be collected).

The fact, that every Gecko based browser doesn't work on Replicant, for now - this includes IceCat, Fennec, etc. - is just a "secondary theatre of war".
