Bluetooth potentially working on the Galaxy S 2

Added by Wolfgang Wiedmeyer almost 7 years ago

Replicant does not ship the proprietary firmware that is needed to make the Bluetooth chip working, so it is expected that Bluetooth does not work. With Replicant 6.0, initialization of the Bluetooth chip happens differently and is not aborted if the proprietary firmware is not found. The consequence is that Bluetooth seems to be working on the Galaxy S 2.

It appears that a preinstalled firmware in the chip is used instead. Unfortunately, we can't yet change the status page and mark Bluetooth as working there for the S 2 because there are a few caveats.

I discussed this with Paul on irc and his concern was that the preinstalled firmware on the chip could be a generic version that is not adapted for the phone. This could mean that it is not calibrated, which is a potential health risk. The chip could radiate more than what is allowed for certification. Lack of calibration could cause other issues as well during usage.

It is also possible that the preinstalled firmware is only operational on certain device revisions and not all Galaxy S 2 devices.

So use at your own risk! Sadly, we can't yet recommend to enable Bluetooth on the S 2 after installing Replicant.
