Signal installation causes unusable phone Galaxy S2 (solved with the replicant 6 (0003) version)
Added by Bas H. almost 7 years ago
Hi Guys,
I am using this wonderful system for over 1 Year now on a S2 and never had any problems. A few days ago I updated from 6.1 to 6.2 it was easy and there was no errors. had a problem with installing an app "eduroam" from F-droid store is an app for german wifi at universities, the installation caused a big crash, the phone was flickering, made a restart (need half an hour to restart) and then it was unusable, flickering and crashing every time I touched an app. So I decided to reinstall completely (with apd sideload from a ubuntu system), this works but when I am now trying to install "Signal messenger" the same problem occurs. I also tried to get back to the old Version 6.1 but and tried other versions of Signal but it its impossible.
I need this app because many groups here are using it.
It seems like it is the same bug from linageos witch is mentioned in 2 other threads here?
It is a little bit wired because in the past using Signal never was a problem, just installed it from the apk file.
I will try a 6 installation and will leave the app outside.
If I can do anything else let me now, but it is almost impossible to use the system after the installation eg. search for logs etc.

FYI, thread https://redmine.replicant.us/boards/9/topics/14315 describes some issues encountered with Signal.
In particular, last version was not tagged «unstable», perhaps is it linked to your issue. If so, installing last stable version should make it.
However, another problem is it cannot import MMS so you will be unable to access any of your former MMS if you import SMS and MMS into Signal.
Regards.

Thx for your answer, I tried also an older version, but the installation is still not possible. The phone ends ups in a long reboot loop, after 20 Minutes it starts normally but the app Center crashes every time and starting the Signal app causes a reboot loop again.
Has anyone the same issues or is nobody here using Signal? I installed a fresh repplicant 6.1 without signal and everything is running now.
But the Battery Fu App is not in the F-droid store, so the only way to save energy is the flight mode. Are there other apps to manage the connection? With battery fu it was possible to go online every hour to check the messenger, after that it automatically goes offline again. Otherwise the battery drains down very quick.
I dont import SMS or MMS to Signal, so thats not a problem.

These reboot loops due to app updates shouldn't happen anymore with the latest release (0003).

I just made a new clean install and now with thew 0003 release it is working perfect again!
Thank you so much for your great work!
Is the preparation for the heimdal kernel mode unnecessary in the 0002/0003 version? When I press "Volume down, Select, Power" at startup, I got directly into the menu. I dont need to flash the kernel first.

I put the solution also into the topic, maybe other persons had the same issue.
