Software which ask and need gps, video, etc…

Added by Daniel Alsace over 4 years ago

Hello,

It was hard to find something good to have nice and decent maps.
On computers, the program offroad has very nice maps, with level curves, type of forest or agricultural land, etc…
With replicant, Zanavi has bugs because of no gps, but it works.

TRIfA, the tox client, has no possibility to make just only audio call! And it crashes.
On the computer, I have the choice between audio and video call!

I am enthousiast to use alternative software, but they don't think about replicant, or just people who don't need or want to make video call!

I useOsMand which I find quite useful. Nevertheless, it uses some non-free services and recent versions require access to SD card (which may solve having to install maps into internal memory) and microphone access (allegedly to record sound notes, but I don't want this app to access mic), so I didn't upgrade it.

I used early versions of Zanavi and it was quite confusing IMHO.

I don't make video calls, so I haven't looked up any app yet.

I prefer not to use non-free services with replicant, and not to use OsMand.

It's nice to have this project, replicant (even though I really hate android as OS, it's the only real free alternative, and replicant is already less bloated than original android), and for me it's not relevant to use proprietary services, online or not (there is LineageOS for this purpose).

It's not just with Zanavi, but with plenty of software which ask localisation or video! And then crash.

I found aat and location map viewer which works without gps (but not practical to use!). I wonder why mapping software like offroad are so rare in f-droid.

I tested the app fake traveler (and changed in settings to say fake traveler is the fake locator provider), but it seems not really work.

It could be interesting to have some replicant fake video and localisation app (sadly I'm not developper :(

Hello Daniel,

We have an experimental build of Replicant 6 that might make audio calls possible on the Tox client. I have never used Tox before, and I wouldn't have anyone I could try to call to test it with if I were to download it, but I do have this experimental build running on one of my devices and it seems fairly stable. You can find the link to the builds here: https://redmine.replicant.us/boards/9/topics/15211?r=15248#message-15248 Please feel free to let us know your experiences with it if you decide to test it out.

In Solidarity,
Kurtis

Hello,

I must buy an extra phone (samsung s3 i9300) to test it (it's more safe I mean). I found one, I will see, and inform you when I finish to install this experimental build.

Hello,

I installed this experimental build on a device (a friend has the same i9300 phone, with broken screen, but working). I tested TRIfA with my computer, the audio call is working between the computer and the phone!

I tested thorium, to download peertube videos. It crashes (I wanted just download them, not play them), but ok, I know video is not working.

I did not test more (it's pleasant to have directly f-droid and repwifi up to date)

On the old build installed on my phone, thorium can download videos, and not play them, it's ok. But when I'm on the page of a video and want to go back to the homepage, using the hardware back button, it crashes.
To use thorium to download peertube videos, I must search my video, download it, and then quit thorium by doing a long click on the back hardware button to force close thorium (there is an option in developper options to do that).

I tested Antox, here they advice to use it ( https://tox.chat/download.html ).

The phone call doesn't work with my old version of replicant, but antox doesn't crash, just the phone call. With the new version of replicant it will be ok.
