Switching between apps and closing apps

How do I switch between apps and close apps?
On my Android, the button on the left of the home button can do this, and Google has instructions for swiping up from the bottom of the screen; but that has no effect in my Replicant.

Hello,
On my samsung S3 i9300, a long click on the middle button (home button) at the bottom shows a list of frequently used apps, I can switch between apps this way.
When we go in parameters - developper options - the last option is force close with a long click on the return button.
I use this to close apps.

It's also possible to configure the keys under 'Settings|Buttons'.
I configured the menu button (left of home button) as 'Recent apps switcher' and double tap action of home button to 'Last app'.

Thanks, that's it! I can also close each app, and at the bottom, there's a menu icon that's probably for closing all of the apps. I had a ton of apps open!
