Can't see previews in Gallery (Replicant 4.2 in Samsung Galaxy S)

Added by Xan VFR over 10 years ago

Hi

I've installed Replicant 4.2 0001 in my Samsung Galaxy S and it works like a charm.

Only inconvient I've found so far is that I can't see any preview in Gallery. I can see every single picture by accessing it, although.

Any ideas/hints on what to try to solve this malfunctioning in my device?

Thanks in advance and keep up with your excellent work!

Yes I'm experiencing this too. The truth is that we need a new Gallery app, this one simply isn't fit anymore. This is listed in our list of Tasks and I won't personally spend time on the issue. I heard CyanogenMod is developing one, maybe we'll use it if it doesn't rely too heavily on OpenGL.

Thank you Paul

I searched in F-Droid for gallery apps before posting for help. Didn't know about this issue.

I'll look up on the Internet for free alternatives (if they exist) and check on CyanogenMod progress.

Got some good news.
Resetting all the data of com.android.providers.media somehow enables the preview.
However you loose all your media files (actually it seems that your system just forgets they're there) and the previews always start from the first pictures you took ...

I found this one. It is just really slow (openGL?) and doesn't seem to have any file management functionality.

How hard is it to make a vanilla gallery app ?

Have you tried to move old pictures to another location, open gallery app, move files back and recheck gallery app?

This is just a live wallpaper. As you say, it doesn't have any file management funcionality

When I opened this thread I looked up CyanogenMod gallery app so I don't remember right now which one is the right one:

I put a request sometime ago on F-Droid forums asking for someone to make a new Gallery App for Replicant 4.2: https://f-droid.org/forums/topic/request-gallery-app-for-replicant-4-2/

Nobody answered and I don't have any programming skills, so the task remains undone.

Thanks for submitting that on F-Droid. Writing such an application is part of our Tasks to improve Replicant!

I've found a workaround for this problem. The problem lies somewhere in the way how thumbnails are generated and saved.
The thumbnails are stored inside /storage/emulated/0/DCIM/.thumbnails
So, all i did was simply removing the folder and replacing it with a simple file (cd /storage/emulated/0/DCIM && rm -Rf .thumbnails && touch .thumbnails).
After quickly checking that the file is actually a simple file, I opened the gallery app and tada! I had the thumbnails.
However, it looks like the phone has to generated all the thumbnails each time the app is used.
