Description

This is true at least for 004 version.

Location should be off by default then users can choose whether they want it on later.

  • Target version changed from Replicant 6.0 0004 to Replicant 6.0 0005

Thanks a lot for the report.

I'm unsure how to change that without more research. So unless someone else sends a patch for it on the mailing list, it most probably won't make it to the 0004.

As for the impact, most users are probably using only free software applications, so the impact is limited.

Given that we have a huge privacy bug (leak of calling or called numbers) that is fixed in the 0004(-rc), it's probably best not to delay more than necessary that release.

As for the localization capabilities:
  • The GPS doesn't work on any of the devices supported by Replicant 6.0 yet. For some devices it would be doable but it require people to spend time on it.
  • The location through the cellular network is available to applications, which is a good thing if the applications are free software, but sadly it's not very precise yet as we probably have only 1 cellular tower for localization (we need to fix that though).

Ah and I forgot: in the 0004 we will have a script (modem.sh) that can disable the modem completely. If the modem is connected to the network, that network (or computers listening to the airwaves) can localize the phone with 10 or 20 meters of accuracy.

As the flight mode doesn't really disable the modem, we cannot give any guarantee that the phone cannot be localized if the modem is in flight mode.
