It seem to confuse Thunderbird according to dllud which found a way to bypass the SMTP requirements.

No.
We should still ask for port 993. That's the default port for IMAP with SSL/TLS. Using it will make configuration easier on several email clients. For instance, the Thunderbird workaround has a few extra steps in it just to handle the fact that Thunderbird is defaulting to port 993 when we set SSL/TLS method.
