we have a portential replace webview by something else based on Gecko with a compatible API. Because of that we need to consider sharing maintenance with other projects. For instance Parabola has removed support for qt5-webengine due to freedom issues with Chromium (there is too much code to review for licensing).
In addition, the Jami project also depends on qt5-webengine for the chat feature.
Now Debian is also considering weather or not to remove chromium for maintenance issues: From #debian-mentors:
<pabs> mapreri, mimi89999: #972134 is keeping chromium out of testing, is that intentional (the soft freeze is sooon)
<mapreri> pabs: basically, the security team is not happy with the current status. until a DD steps up saying they want to maintain it it's basically a "nope", so…
<mapreri> and I'm not that DD, I don't want to maintain chromium, I'm only sponsoring uploads
<mimi89999> I don't see anybody else that could know how to maintain Chromium.
Thanks to the person who gave me all these information in #parabola.
update1: fix typo
update2: reformulate everything to add more context + add jami
Denis.
