h2. Introduction

Before we need to upstream in grub the ability to open a partition with an external key to be able to use other distributions than Trisquel.

This was because distributions like Ubuntu and Trisquel had patches, that probably came from the "grub crypt project":http://grub.johnlane.ie/ that enabled such functionality.

The FSF relied on such patches in their infrastructure to ensure that the rootfs of the vm remain encrypted.

However now not only the patches are upstream, but the FSF also don't depend on them anymore.
